Tulsa Courses

For those of you who have played/are familiar with the courses down in Tulsa, what would you recommend?

I will be down there next week Thursday-Saturday and am looking to hit up a few courses. I've been told McClure isn't in the best part of town by a friend who lives in Tulsa but eh...I don't know for sure.

Any courses you'd suggest that I should definitely hit up while in the area?

Haikey has a lot of low ceiling shots under big trees.

Hunter is a mix of total woods and wide open.

Dovillio is a long course that is mostly open.

McClure is perhaps the easiest of this bunch, but every bit as fun to play.

Redhawk has a front 9 that is way too easy followed by a back nine of easy and 3 very tough holes. Probably the worst of the 6.

Blackhawk is the bomb. Played in the woods and long. Dogleg holes, water shots, duel route holes. This is by far the best course in Tulsa. Benches and short tees on many holes.

Redhawk and Blackhawk hands down. Hunter is real fun.

All in all - I wouldn't be too worried in Tulsa - It seemed no more dangerous than Wichita. Pretty clean city from what I remember.

What about Riverside? I'll be staying near it, has anyone played it?

At this point, I'm thinking Riverside, Hunter, McClure, and maybe Blackhawk.

I'm not sure on Blackhawk...I don't mind a challenge but don't want to lose all of my discs in OK! =p Is Blackhawk heavily wooded then? I can't seem to find any maps or pics of the course. Neither Redhawk or Blackhawk are even mentioned on the Tulsa website...

riverside is 9 holes and kinda short. it's also next to a busy road and is loud. hey, try and play them all and post your ratings on best to worst.

Oh yeah, forgot about YMCA Copperhead Canyon. I don't know exactly when that course is open. I kinda trespassed...

That is a heavily wooded course with some pretty extreme holes. This course might be too thick in the summer.

There are several other courses in Tulsa that I didn't mention. Those are either real shorties or I suspect so, but haven't played them.

Don't worry about losing discs at Blackhawk. The holes are almost all in the woods, but they all have good fairways. Course probably plays tougher in the summer. There are 3 water holes and they are consecutive. On all 3 holes, you don't have to throw over the water.

1 reason I recommend black hawk is because there are 2 courses side by side. More bang for your buck. BH only has3 water holes and the are back 2 back 2 back. Other than that you are fine. Especially this time of year.

Are there any good places to get maps of the courses? I hate wandering around w/out a freakin clue...

Not sure about that. Have you check the course directory yet?

The course flow is really pretty easy. Both courses have a unique feature. One of the "spokes" for the bottom of the basket is painted. It points in the direction of the next tee.

I did check the course directory. The Tulsa Disc Sports website doesn't even have either course in Mohawk park listed..

It has the other courses listed with photos of each hole, but no aerial map...
I like the photos of each hole, but they're a bit excessive to try to print out and follow when playing.

The spokes idea sounds great, I love when courses have the next tee box marked, whether it's at the basket or on the tee sign for the previous hole...

If you have passed the 4th grade, you can follow any of the courses. You will be fine. They are easy to follow.

I grew up in Tulsa, but many of the courses weren't there when I was playing. The two "Hawk" course are by far the best, followed by Hunter, and Haikey, IMO. Riverside is actually 18 holes, and is a pretty fun birdie fest of a course. Like somebody said before, you really can't go wrong in Tulsa, and I wouldn't be too worried about finding your way around, or being in a bad part of town. None of the courses are really in a bad part of town, not so much that you would have to be worried about it.
