Courses in OK

Post by Schoen-hopper »

Was wondering if anyone had some information on new courses in OK. I'm headed down to Arkansas this weekend and might play there tomorrow evening, more likely on Sunday.

Tonkawa. Can you navigate it? What were the directions again?

Pawhuska. Is the new course in? Can you navigate it? Need to call ahead?

Ark City (well, almost Oklahoma). Camp Quakerhave. Where is it and who do you call to play?

Both courses were in at The Lodge before the NT. You need to call ahead and check with Jim Taylor to make sure its ok to come out and play 918-724-3121. The course is SE of Pawhuska on the west side of Highway 99. It has excellent signage and tee pads on both courses.

Quaker Haven will require a phone call before playing 620-442-9690. The front 9 has signs and is easy to navigate. The back 9 however, only has tee boards. Someone needs to make the signs he volunteered to make over the winter.... You will most likely need help navigating the back 9. Call me if you want to go sometime. From A.C. go south across the river on 77, take the left onto old highway 77. About a half mile up there is a sign for the camp(sign is on your right side). Turn left at sign, go about 2.5 miles east on the gravel road and the camp is on the north side of the road.

Ron C is the man to talk to about Tonkawa, I've never been there.

From my experience, take the time and go to Pawhuska. You will LOVE the courses there. I think Moccasin Creek is right up your alley Mike. Tight defined lines, holes where you have to hit a landing zone to have a second shot, very well maintained and worth the drive. The Island course there is more open and alot of fun. It has 2 concrete tee pads on each hole as well as a set of reds that hadn't been concreted last time I was there.

They also recently installed a 9 hole (i believe) course in the park in town in Pawhuska.
Throw some D's on it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Played 3 new courses over the weekend.

Lincoln Park: Pittsburgh, KS
Small, nice park. Course played very short. Signs were nice, but in the way of the thrower. Distances on the signs were inaccurate on several holes. Hole 2 was a 190' par 7. My dad made a quadruple eagle on that one, lol. Holes were easier and easier all the way to hole 9. Noticed some bricks on a few holes marking alternate tees, but didn't get a chance to play them. Looked like the course was getting some use though!

Centennial Park: Owasso, OK
Brand new signs and pretty new course overall. Dual pins, but everything was in the short positions. Not many trees, but the course utilized them and espescially used well the creeks running through the park. Several holes with OB on 2 sides. Plamen shot under par here.

Mocassin Creek: Pawhuska, OK
Amazing course! Great signs, baskets, & tee pads. Great terrain with plenty of hazards. Several water hazards and other hazards included OB grassy mounds, giant cylinders, even oil wells! Lots of elevation in play too. This course was tougher than the island course- a little longer and more trees in play. Only cons would be that there weren't too many holes you could duece, while most of them you felt bad if you 4'd. Anotherwords, may holes averaging 3.2-3.5, which isn't ideal. However, the course is probably a great par 3 course for upper level pros. I'd definitely like to give both this one and the island course another go. Jim & Jeremy Taylor are great hosts!

A few more P named towns to visit. Perry Ok. just a little South on I-35 from Tonkawa. Pawnee Ok.E of Perry. Course at Pawnee courtesy of Jack(or was it Joe?)Tiefertiller. Also a new course at the Otoe-Missouria Village on 177 s.(East side of the road behind the gas station) from Ponca or N. from Stillwater. These are all new and make a pretty circular road trip.
The Tonkawa course is very well maintained and the shots are all pretty cool, but difficult. Wetland belts make for treacherous roughs, you go from 2" smooth cut to full length Johnson grass if you land in a wetland belt. Tee pads were painted and are not backfilled yet, so teeing off grass is suggested where you can. DO NOT GET OFF THE FAIRWAY on the river side or you will lose a disc. This is true on all holes that border the river.Forgiveness is hard to find. Hole 7 is especially sneaky in this as the trees hide the drop off! I have a few pictures on my discgolfers-r us page from back when it was rough. I would like to see changes in pin placements made to improve flow and make it safer to have a tourney, but if you are all in a group the holes are very cool.

Thanks for the pics Ron. Drove by Tonkawa on the way home. That google map showed it about 3 miles east and 3 miles S of town. Didn't see any signs for the Casino from the highway. It was already dark though. Is it off Hwy 77?

Perry did look good from the site info. May check it out next time.

This link shows the Casino and housing complex in relation to Tonkawa proper. The tribal complex is on the bottom right of screen. The course is east of the casino, against the river and just north of the two large ponds.

3 course run ! Meet at Otoe- Missouria course to start. 9:30 rules/ 10:00 tee. Move to the in town course in Ponca City(5th street park)for the 2nd short round. Travel to Tonkawa for eats and the finishing round! Added cash and prizes! Good times! This finishes pretty close to I-35 for a quick getaway, or stay and play in the casino. I have'nt seen the installed course at Otoe, but I've heard good things, and I understand the tribe is working hard to make it better quick!
Leroy and several other volunteers have been working really hard on course improvements at Tonkawa, and the course is really looking nice.

Man, talk about a good time! The weather was wonderful, and the company was great as well. After a fun 9 at the Otoe course we caravanned over to 5th st. park in Ponca City and drew from the magic bag. The Alternate course that was drawn was long and very difficult(par was the best score). From there our journey led to the Tonkawa Riverside course. Brendan Hickman and I started this course tied at -2 and finished tied . In the playoff the victory went to Brendan on a 35ft putt. Dinner was served by the tribe and the shrimp, hamburgers, hot dogs, etc ....well, let's just say nobody went away hungry! Did I mention that this was a $20 entry for open? First got $300, second-$150,SuperDave placed 3rd and got paid. In fact, everybody got paid. The prizes for am's included lots of discs, golf bags minis etc. There were 8 open players and around 20 am and novice players. Kudos to Both tribes on a well run event. Special thanks to Leroy Enlow, Preston and Troy warrior, and too many volunteers to mention . The Tonkawa course will be lengthened by 9 more holes by spring and another event will be held. I recomend attending this event. It kicked.

Sure was great weather today! Maybe next time you'll get some Kansans down there to play in a Tonkawa event.
