Disc Golf Magazine

Post by MOthrows »

What did everybody think of the fly 18 article in the latest disc golf magazine? Is that version of disc golf where our future lies? It probably is the most t.v and sponsership friendly, but past that I'm not sure.

I've played on a couple of "fly 18's" and they are bad arse! nothing better than bombing a huge roller right down the middle of a nice green fairway!

Nobody else read the article, or has an opinion? It seemed like a fun topic to debate, but maybe not. It's all b.s to me cause I'm definitely in the lower rungs of the game, but I thought the pro's might have some more insight.

I don't think I read the last article, but there was one in a previous DGWN. Was this playing on ball golf courses using the rubber pads and portable baskets and paying green fees ect?

If so, it's not what Headrick wanted in my opinion. Headrick wanted to see the sport grow, but wanted people to understand the importance of community. One rumored concept on Headricks creation of disc golf courses to be in city parks was to give the inner-city youth something constructive to do for free. I'm sure that local rec departments to this day don't have a shortage on discs. If they do, something should be done about it.

As for having a role in the development of our sport, it is giving us some great exposure.

It's an interesting problem it seems to me. At one level disc golf is clearly for the masses and can be played for nearly nothing, and at the other end of the spectrum only a select few can be recognized as the best the sport has to offer. I realize our sport runs this broad array (and that I fit in the lower rung) I just wondered what other people thought would get us over to the next level. The Fly 18 originator makes some pretty strong statements in the article and I'm not sure how I feel about what he said one way or the other. Either way, I think the topic is fun to debate, one way or the other.

Headrick himself once said that in order for disc golf to be big that we the players had to think big. However he also explained the problem as the only thing disc golfers want to do is play disc golf, not be the leaders of a new worldwide organization. The only crazy idea is the one you never try. At least someone is taking some initiatives. Mad props to that.
