New Benches

We have parts for 18 benches to be installed at Herman Hill Park. The club paid for these and Bill's shop class made them.

I can elaborate, or if you are interested, I could just send you the email with the plan. But the gist is, get the tools, get some people to help, get 'r done. We want to have these in before Doo Dah and their are plenty of other things that need done, so we don't want to put this off till the last minute. That said, we will still probably need to split this into two workdays. Right now, I'm thinking this weekend, perhaps Saturday afternoon, for painting and assembly. Then the following weekend, if not sooner, for installation. Please contact me if you think you can volunteer some time or tools for this cause.

Any chance of getting benches at Oak done up? I know that there is a problem with vandals but we can all dream can't we?

The city has said no to benches in the past at Oak. I would like to show them the benches we will put in, let them know its on our dime, and propose benches at Oak again. They had some policy about nothing above ground level (other than the baskets?) in that park and that's why we haven't done tee signs either. It also makes mowing more difficult. Need new buckets out there too, we might have to do some fundraising for this.

I will keep you posted about when we can get going on these. I may not be available until 3pm Saturday (work).

I think I can be at Herman Hill Park by about 3pm Saturday. Right now, I don't know if anyone else can help. Bill wrote assembly instructions that I will have a couple copies of. The gist of what we want to do is this:

-Paint stain on the bottoms of the benches.
-Mark hole locations for the metal bottoms, which are poles welded to angle irons.
-Bolt the benches together.
-Paint the bench legs while the benches are upside down.
-Try to make room in the clubhouse for 18 benches.

I will try to bring enough tools if I can, but any you can bring would help. Having another set of saw horses or something to work on would help. Send me a PM or an email if you think you can help.

Turns out I don't have a set of saw horses, but only one "saw horse". If anyone has something that we could use to work on, that would be great. Just bring it by the clubhouse around 3pm Saturday.

Mike i will be bringing a small fold up work bench. Also what sized brushes did you say you wanted me to bring? I even have some old sleaves that i have cut off of shirts that make good rags, i'll bring those too.

Sounds good. 3" or 4" brush would be good. We actually have some foam brushes, I'd just like to see if a better brush leaves a better looking finish. If you can bring some kind of bench, I should hopefully have the rest.

On what we were discussing: I'm not sure polyurethane is a good idea. Very expensive, doesn't go very far, and would likely chip off after time. At that point, it would be impossible to keep them looking nice. We'll either have to recoat the stain on these every year or two, or if the stain really doesn't protect them, we can always paint them later.

a 4 inch brush is pretty big. unless you plan on pouring the stain in a bucket the brush wont fit into the opening of most smaller Stain cans. if you have gallon size cans of stain then the bigger brush will work. i will look and see if I have brushes that big. i know i have some 3 and 2 1/2 inch brushes for sure. I have the polyerster nylon brushes which are what you want to use for stain . The hair ( boars hair or horse hair) bristle brushes really dont work for stain very well. I will just bring my painting kit and we should have all we need.. I do know that those cheep fome brushes are not the way to go. I have enough brushes for you and I to get the job done. If any one else showes up we can get them working on putting the botoms on the stained benches.
