Here is some information concerning the qualification system ($50 free entry) into Wellington Match Play Finals.

One event to go coming up at the Round Up next Saturday. Like the Elks, it will be a qualifier for the finals next Sunday. The top finisher from each division from those whose names are not currently in red (current top third) are able to win a tournament qualifier spot. These names are in green from the Elks.

The current top third players are listed in red. There are a few divisions where the bottom spot could be lost if this person doesn't show up to play the Round Up and the player immediately below them does play.

The top pro and top am of each region will be qualified. Listed in blue, the only regional qualifier who isn't already in the top third is Ryan Beisner.

Tied at 17 events each, Brandon Mace & Bob Hardister (orange) are tied for the last chance Friz-Rocker clause which states that the player who isn't qualified by any of the above who has played the most events will be qualified. If Mace & Bob both play the Round Up, however, they'll both get in.

The current top 3 points earners in each division are in bold. Most of these spots look firmly set. One battle still going is Buddy/Rich for 2nd & 3rd in Grandmasters. And of course the biggest battle is for 1st place in the Open division with Crispin trailing Smitty by a mere 2 points!

Since Smitty beat Crispin by 3 points at the Elks, I'll explain why the lead is only 2. Prior to the beginning of the season, I said we'd use a better system for tracking the points. Last year, anyone involved in a tie got the max points possible. Now, they get the average, which reflects what the true value should be rather than awarding "bonus points" for ties. For example, in a 10 member tournament with 2 tying for 1st, each players gets 9.5 points, not 10. The total points for each player is always rounded up, however, if there is a half-point total. The half points are only rounded up for total points, not for each individual tournament.

Before the Elks, both players had 1044 points. Without rounding the total however, Crispin had 1044 & Smitty had 1043.5. For the Elks, Smitty earned 36.5 & Crispin 33.5. This increased the totals to 1080 for Smitty & 1077.5 for Crispin, rounding up to 1078. So Smitty has a 2.5 point lead.

To decide who should win the Kassner Cup, it could be left up to the half-point rounding up. But I would suggest that if the final result is only a half-point difference, an alternate method be decided for who wins the cup. Play it off? The two of you should decide, should it come to it. Splitting hairs, yes, but who would have thought it would be this close?! Crispin with the home course advantage, but a tall order to make up points on Smitty. Who will be this year's champ? Regardless of the winner, an excellent year for you both!

Lets just hope it doesn't come down to this. It could be a long drawn out custody battle for "Little Buddy".
