Crazy Barry Schultz Shot

Post by mrsenortyler »

Just this last weekend at Atlanta Open. The TD forgot to mark this area OB!

"Yeah, there's a nice opening there Barry between the roof and them PROPANE TANKS. No pressure." :D

He got lucky getting out of there. Personally, I'd have just taken a stroke and re-teed.

I don't think that's an option if you:

A. Didn't lose your disc
B. Didn't go O.B.

You can always call an unplayable lie (even if it isn't). I'd have to check the options for that, but I think it's something like..

1) Take a stroke and play up to 5m back on the line of play.
2) Take a stroke and play from the previous lie. Which would be the tee in this case.

803.06

A. A player may declare his or her lie to be an unplayable lie. The player is the sole judge as to whether the lie is unplayable. The unplayable lie may be relocated to a new lie that is: (1) No closer to the hole, on the line of play and within five meters of the unplayable lie; or (2) The previous lie as evidenced by the marker disc or, if the marker disc has been moved, from an approximate lie as agreed to by the majority of the group or an official. The original throw plus one penalty throw are counted in the player's score.

Looks like you guys were right! Thanks for clearing that up!

I think they changed the rule. It used to be relief was taken on the line of play only. I remember something like you could choose lateral relief, but it cost you an extra stroke! Now it looks like you can get 5m lateral relief. Good thing to remember for those tough situations where even a pitch out isn't possible.

I would like to see what the shot looked like from Barrys Point of View.

What I like, is that he never got pi$$ed off. We didn't kick anything. He didn't bitch at any of the people walking around looking at his lie. That probably has a little to do with the execution of the shot.

I know I would have been pretty mad. Unless, it was a hella drive that I was chipping out to get an easy 4.

Pretty crazy, that this was an NT event and that thing wasn't marked. That is one of the best players of all time. What does Joe Average Golfer do on that hole?

What worries me is that any event can be an NT as long as they have money. I think that the NTs should be saved for the best events on the tour.

With that said, that was a BA shot!

If that area was park property and padlocked he was probably trespassing. If you have to climb a fence into a padlocked area without the express permission of the property owner you probably aren't legally supposed to be be in there. I say the area was OB by default due to it's padlocked and obviously off limits status. Does the TD really need to specifically call a padlocked, fenced in area full of park maintenance materials OB? I mean come on.... That's just silly. Stroke him and make him have a person with a key get his disc for him.

Nice shot though.

His disc was pinned against the wall and he moved it in 1 meter. According to rule 803.05,

No relief is granted from park equipment (such as signs, trash cans, picnic tables, etc.) as they are considered part of the course.

Looks like he got away with that infraction.

Look again. I think because of where the basket was, he marked it behind the disc, relative to the hole, and then threw 90degrees from normal play. Still one amazing shot, very well executed, and as Smitty said , it was all about his demeanor. 8) That said, I can't believe it wasn't OB!

After seeing that, it would be cool to have a trick shot contest for all the people in Kansas. Throw over very tall trees, buildings, in sheds  and a few other places.

I remember one year at Beloit, Smitty ran an edge program "skill shot challenge". I thought that was really fun. Several baskets had several stations each. Each station tested a different skill: putts, approach, flick shot, tomahawk, around a tree, perhaps some others. I think you measured how far out you were on each shot and added it up to a total score. I'd like to see that at a tournament again: maybe make it crazier with tougher shots.

You measured how far out you were after the shot. Seems like there was some putting involved also? I don't remember all the details, but could probably find them.

Official Rules and shots

That could maybe make a come back at Beloit. Just looking for a Title sponsor. I know a guy that could maybe hook something up.

As I recall, and I could be wrong, but didn't the TD at the Norton tourney specifically call all the rooftops on all the buildings OB??? :)
