K-State bans disc golf during daylight hours

Post by the_lung »

Because it reportedly caused serious nerve damage to a woman and supposedly thousands of dollars of damage to buildings.

This is why we shouldn't put disc golf courses right on heavily used areas of college campuses, near surrounding park roads, entrance roads, playgrounds, picnic areas, and around other multi-use areas of parks. It's just another black eye for the sport.

At Thursday night's Student Governing Association meeting, Faculty Representative Bill Muir announced a new policy that limits the playing of disc golf on the K-State campus.

The policy officially bans the sport on the main campus from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, and was prompted by university administrators' concerns.

"The policy is in response to thousands of dollars in damage to university buildings," Muir said.

According to the policy, "persons choosing to play disc golf on the university main campus may be asked by KSU Police to provide personal identification. Police can then determine whether the player is a repeat offender, or whether or not the player is responsible for 'campus damage or injury.'"

The issue was originally raised at a Dec. 5, 2008 Student Senate meeting after a woman was hit with a rogue frisbee and later suffered from serious nerve damage.

"As a point of information, the policy applies to disc golf only, not to people playing traditional frisbee," said Senate Vice Chair Emily Haug, junior in marketing and political science.

Violators of this policy could find themselves facing criminal charges for trespassing or be removed or banned from campus.

However, administrators said they do not mean to completely discourage this popular pastime. Haug discussed the possibility of constructing a disc golf course near the campus.

"This would be one safe alternative for disc golf enthusiasts," Haug said.

It isn't even a "course".

You throw a statues, trees, signs, etc. It is an object course that was probably designed to play with fastbacks and ult. discs.

Good think buildings don't take damage at night.

True that. I always played during passing periods, but I can see how easy it would be to hit a person.

I did put a huge dent in the side of a state vehicle once, and skipped a few off some windshields of other state vehicles.

Not sure what they mean by putting a course "near campus." There is only one park near campus a block south of aggieville, and it has TONS of pedestrian traffic around the perimeter.

You HAVE to play it with someone that knows it first. Otherwise, you won't figure it out. Even though they've banned disc golf during the daylight hours, i bet the administration doesn't know more than 1 hole on the course.

It is pretty nuts to have people throwing golf discs right through the campus. Only a matter of time... It'd be cool if they got a new course out of this deal.
