Gran Canyon Disc Golf Course

Post by Schoen-hopper »

I've heard this was once one of the best courses in the world. When I went to Florida, the course was pulled 2 weeks before I got the chance to play it.

The owner sold the property and the deal went bad. Now the county may but the land. Gregg Hosfeld, course designer, has got a petition out to sway the county into including disc golf into the park. Sounds like they have a chance at succeeding.

Check it out on the PDGA frontpage.

I signed the petition and it took about 30 seconds. We've lost, or might lose, a lot of the worlds best courses. I'd like to hear about one being reclaimed!

I've played it and would like to play it again. It's actually quite excellent despite the fact that Hosfeld designed it. He got lucky with a great piece of land.

Hosfeld have a reputation for building bad courses or something? Just curious.

Not at all. I guess I was just being snarky because he insulted a course designed by a buddy of mine in Disc Golf World a while back. Greg's alright and his design at Brookesville is one of the best I've ever played. I really don't know the guy too well at all, only met a him a couple times. So take my comment with a grain of salt.

E-mac about killed him at Water Works a couple of years ago.

Hos was teeing off on hole 9? Eric was trying to throw a roller on hole 8 to the long pin. Down the valley and back up. Long story short. The disc hit a root and wizzed past Hos. The short argument after it was classic.

Hosfeld used to write an article in DGWN called the front 9 and the back 9 or something like that. He's travelled to hundreds of courses and he gave his take on what courses people should know about and which he didn't like.

He gives feedback on the Course Designers board and I gotta say he knows what he is doing when it comes to course design. Very insightful guy. Not afraid to express his opinion, though, so I bet he comes off the wrong way sometimes.

By the way, some guy is selling DVD's of Ken Climo setting a doubles record at the course right before it was pulled. See the PDGA thread under courses. He said you could send hime $12 via paypal at [email protected] and he'll ship you the 2 DVD set. If you wait a few days, I'll let you know if they are worth getting.

I have a copy of the DVDs. They are worth the $ if you are interested in the course and like to see Climo throw. It's a pretty casual round they are playing but the quality of the DVD is pretty good for the price and you get a feel for the Gran Canyon course.

Didn't want that to read like I was going to defend Gregg. I was just curious.
He once showed me his data base of every course he'd ever played and the detailed notes he had on each one. Showed me the time, date, and notes he had from when played my home course. Pretty impressive list of courses played and detailed notes.

One things for sure the man's got mad juggling skills. If that don't bowed well towards a guys cooldar I don't know what does!

I signed the petition.
