Greetings,
If anyone is interested in helping design the new 18 holes at Frontier, get in touch with me. We have to submit the proposal and blueprints by the 1st of April, in order to have it budgeted in for the 2006 fiscal year. Chad and I are planning to meet tomorrow for a round and some discussion. I'll let you know what time later.

I vote for 18 on each side of Main Street.
You could get 2 or 3 holes between the road and the river, north of hole 1. You have lots of ground along the Dike West of Main, not many trees, but good elevation.
On the East side of Main you have a ton of SICK LAND!!! You have the river down behind stepping stones, you have all that sweet crap just to the east of main.
What are the chances of this going in the ground?
Hays is probably the most played course in the state. I have never been the only person out there.

I dunno, Hays is pretty busy. Granted it slows down in the winter time. During Spring on the otherhand, it would NOT be very unlikely to see what seems like a group on every hole.
Damn fair weather golfers.

I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times.
Smitty,
Could you email me the proposal you used? I asked the parks director for suggestions and feedback as well, but other insight is always useful.
What I have in mind for the layout is this: after finishing hole 18 you cross back over to the west side of the park. Depending on the parking situation, I think we could have 4-5 holes follow big creek to the end of the buffalo pins. There's elevation, trees, and water. Elements that make challenging holes, plus most would be more lefty friendly. We will write a grant proposal for a walking bridge that would serve two purposes. First it would literally provide a bridge for campus students to get to the park, and obviously be purposeful for disc golfers. Now, although the land on the north side of big creek is maintained by the city, it is owned by the University. So we have to negotiate with the administration, but it never hurts to know the president.
If all goes well with the university, we will probably have room for 3-5 holes on the north side of big creek. Right behind Lewis Field there is a huge running hill created when the dike was built. Plus, there's a big bend in the river, so again excellent terrain to work with. These holes would wind around to main street, where the course would cross to the south side of main. Over where the pin locations are for hole 16. I imagine we could have 2-3 holes we could squeeze in there. These holes would follow around the creek back to hole 15. So I'm sure we could have at least 9 holes that flow well in these areas.
The other 9 would start where the stepping stones are, follow the creek on the north side around to the bridge on the highway, and then follow the creek back towards the stepping stones on the south side of the creek. The terrain here is treacherous and would take a lot of effort to clear and maintain. But there used to be bike trails back in this area, and there are still some paths that remain. I forsee most of these holes to be short and more skill oriented. Similar to some of the new holes in Ellis or Zboaz.
I forsee this being a reality. The Convention and Visitors Bureau are being very supportive and the Park's Director has comitted himself to making the disc golf course the best maintained in the state. If we can make the right appeals to the city and university I think they'll support it. With the article in DG World news where Forbes FYI magazine endorses Disc golf as a growing and respectable sport, it really builds our credibility.
If we can get the proposal approved, I'll start working on the university to intall 18-32 holes on campus, but I'll take it one step at a time. Hope that answers your questions.
Oh, by the way, we're playing at 2pm Sunday.

Im curious as to how much a bridge like that would cost? Granted its not gonna have to be as big as the swinging bridge or the jellison bridge on campus but i would think that it would cost ten thousand or so. Man it would be sweet tho. I vote for a zip line instead.
A couple of holes in the center of the "practice area" by the tourney head quarters would be sweet too and a little reminiscent of that hole in beatrice with a thousand trees in the fairway.
Something else we need to think about is this "renovation" thing they got planned for that area where the wild west fest is every year Im sure that land has long been spoken for.
18 more holes out there could get pretty crowded. A 27 hole course wouldnt be a bad idea either....something to think about.

Hays is indeed a super-tour caliber course. The new tees and alt pins added a great deal to an already great set-up. It seems that the only limitation is that only so many people can play it at one time. The offset starting times at the Frontier Open tried to resolve this last year. It was a good idea, but the rounds took a little longer than expected and it may have been easier (in this case , with the limited tournout) just to let everyone play together. Of course, you got to hope for a bigger tournout, so something has got to give.
It seems that people are looking for a solution in adding a new course. It just keeps sounding better. I haven't seen much off the beaten path, but it sound like there is some great land to work with. Sounds like a little walk between 2 seperate 9 holes? If the course can be made so as not to entangle with the existing course, that would be a great thing. I have a notion that just having one more 18 hole course would make a huge difference in hosting a big event. Thanks for all of the effort St8. The course really does represent Kansas disc golf well.
