Temp course for Frontier
Temp course for Frontier
Wassup!
I talked to Mace about setting up an 18 hole temp course for the Frontier this year, that way we can avoid doing flights. He was cool with the idea, so I emailed Jeff Boyle and he said it wasn't a problem as long as we provide the baskets. So we're off to a decent start. Now I need to talk to the grounds director at FHSU and see if we can use some of their land for the rest of the holes. I don't forsee a problem as long as they don't have anything already booked for that weekend (Cross Country most likely). Thought I'd keep you posted, I'm slowly getting the ball rolling so post your food for thought here.

Got the thumbs up from the parks dept. I called Dan Heater at Fort Hays and although he wouldn't confirm it, said that FHSU is always supportive of these sort of events. He gave me another individuals number, but he won't be back in the office until Monday. How many portable baskets do we have here in Hays?

Yes, I will be there for sure!
Chad I like the temp. idea with the old course mixed in.
I hate to wait on people and that is all that you do on the old course, you should use the tees and pins and play the combo with the best flow.
It just wouldn't be the Frontier without playing the original course atleast once.

I dont like the temp idea at first it sounded ok but know i'm against it.
And no I dont think playing the best configuration for flow is a good idea either. Flow really isnt a problem when we have staggered tee times thats the whole reason Ron started that 15 million years ago. The only reason Hays bottlenecks all the time is b/c you have 500 ft holes right behind 200 ft holes on top of that all that has to happen is one dude throwin in the water that looks for his crap forever or a guy with the initials AW in front of your group........
You think its chaotic then wait till 18 more holes try to get squeezed in around 18 exsisting holes and........ im not playing on an M-14 or my Klinger spitter.
A temp. course just doesnt sound good c-mon this is freaking HAYS we dont need no temp our course is bad azz enuf!!!!
I vote for not changing a dam thing cuz it was fine last year!!!!! If its not broke dont fix it........

I also like the idea of playing Frontier 4 times with different settings for each. Original to original, original to alternates, concrete to original, concrete to alternates.
Is that possible for a B tier event? Last year we had staggered starts, which was a good idea. Their was a little less in attendance than was expected. It turned out that we coulda stuck everyone in one group, but the schedule was already set for staggered starts, so thats how it was done. For some reason, rounds were still taking over 3 hours. That meant waiting over 3 hours per round and over 3 hours waiting for the other group that your travelling with to finish.
Doesn't seem like their is an easy solution here. I'd say do whatever will bring the most people to Hays! If the course is planning on being expanded to 36 holes, why not try out the new set up?

I think our existing course is stellar as well, but I also try to look through the eyes of someone who may be traveling from out of state or else where. A 10 am tee off is much easier for everyone, and I think it will help boost our attendance. Furthrermore, looking through the eyes of a TD (and I know Mace will back me on this one), it's a pain in the ass to do flights.
If, and this still isn't a go, we recieve permission to use some of Fort Hays ground, it presents some positive options. First, establishing a working relationship with Fort Hays may open up the opportunity for installing a permanent course some day. Second, if this is successful, then perhaps it will motivate the athletic department to invest or at least consider organizing a collegiate disc golf team.
As for the M-14, Killer Klinger baskets, I've thought about pulling the Mach III's from Rolling Hills, and maybe talking to Skyler about borrowing 9 from Ellis for the weekend. This way there's no discrepancies and everything is consistent.
If we get approval to use the land, then my vote is yes on a temp course.

Well, I received the news from FHSU today and we are approved! We will be allowed access to all the property along Big Creek-- including Project Adventure. That gives us a huge chunk of land to use and a lot of time to coordinate, design and prepare for this temp course and tournament.
Now, what I suggest is this; we all take the coming weekend to think about what we want the future of the Frontier Open to be. We've taken it from a C-tier status to a B-tier status. We've taken the course from one tee and one pin on each hole to two tees and two pins. We've submitted a proposal for another 18 hole course. We've gathered support from the Parks Department, the local businesses, the CVB and most recently the University. The biggest selling point to these organizations have been the fact that we can attract more participants and visitors to our community if the tournament and courses are given the support needed.
Now, last year we had to compete with the Mighty Shunga Nunga being the weekend after ours. That hurt our turnout. Last year we did flights with less than half of the maximum number of participants and still had 3 hour rounds. If we did flights this year with more participants how long will the rounds be? Last year we had people who didn't attend because of the 8:00am tee off time. That hurt our attendance. More participants equals bigger payouts.
Again, this is food for thought, and please take the weekend to think about it. I'm not saying it's my way or the highway, but if we don't share the same vision for this tournament, then maybe I'm not the one who should be coordinating it.
