NIN

Post by str8 »

Just wanted to let you all know I won't be able to golf tomorrow or Thursday, I will be at the NIN concert in Denver. I might try to squeeze in a round at the Badlands, but that all depends. Have a great day!!!

Amazing, incredible, epic, phenomenal...just a few words that may capture the full experience. I have been a NIN fan since The Pretty Hate Machine(1989), and now some 16 years later I experienced it all live. Trent and the boys played for 1 hour and 47 minutes, and it was the most methodical set that could have been assembled. After they'd hit you with a cinder block square to the groin, they'd tone it down and give you a chance to catch your breath. If anyone has a chance to catch them in St. Louis or Dallas, I would highly recomend it.

Tracy, I didn't see Pat, but RED is my favorite color.

Tank,

Back in 94 I had a chance to go see a band called Pink Floyd at Arrowhead Stadium for $120. I passed at the time thinking I would catch them at a later date. That never happened. I thought I missed my opportunity with NIN since the last time they toured was in 2000. I wasn't going to live with that feeling again. However, the way that Trent is looking these days, I'd bet he'll be touring for at least ten more years. Let's just say he got off the smack, cut his hair and must spend 2 hours a day in the gym.

Pink Floyd was in KC in 94?? I don't remember that. I saw them in KC in 88 and it was one of my greatest experiences ever! And that's not just the brown acid talking! Saw The Rolling Stones in Arrowhead that year too.

I saw NIN on the original Lollapalooza tour in 90. I was a huge Janes Addiction and Butthole Surfers fan. The band NIN, who I had vaguely heard of, came on and rocked the house. I went out and bought Pretty Hate Machine and loved it for a while but then grew bored with it and haven't listened to them much since. I also got in to Ice T at that concert and bought Original Gangsta and what was IceT's heavy metal bands name? The band that made Cop Killer famous. Kind of ironic that IceT now play's a cop on TV. After IceT's gig we were jamming to Janes Addiction and my buddy says IceT is standing right beside you! Sure enough he was right there roaming the crowd. I managed to shake his hand before he moved on.

Isn't Trent responsible for Marylin Manson?

Rich,

I believe Body Count was the name of his heavy band, and yes Manson used to play with NIN. Trent writes and records all his material and then hires musicians to perform live on tour. I believe Manson played keyboards, but it might have been guitar.

I double checked myself on the Floyd concert, and it would have been 95. That's when they released Pulse and went on tour to support it.

The first Lollapalooza tour was bad ass, wish I could have made that one. I believe Tool and Rage Against the Machine were relatively unheard of bands there too.

Are you sure it was 95? I don't think so... Not only was I there but I have an old KY102 radio station bumper sticker that is the station logo with "Pink Floyd 94" and the Dark Side of the Moon prism image on it. It's stuck to the glass front on my old stereo. It was the Division Bell tour and they were there on June 20th, 1994. (ain't Google great?)

I was sitting dead center 14 rows from the stage. It was spectacular. One of the most amazing spectacles I have ever seen. I've been to a lot of concerts and love great music and still catch a lot of shows but that show was something altogether different. The music was fantastic, David Gilmore was excellent, but the atmosphere, lights, stage setup, sound, crowd.... A truly unique experience.

I saw the Stones in 88 as well and, although it was a great show, it couldn't even compare to the Pink Floyd show in the same venue.

Body Count that was it! It's all coming back to me now. They rocked like no one expected! crap AIN'T LIKE THAT!!! CRUNCH...CRUNCH CRUNCH CRUNCH....CRUNCH CRUNCH...CRUNCH CRUNCH CRUNCH......CRUNCH CRUNCH CRUNCH....COP KILLER!! Yeah I can hear it now! Some good old fashion feel good music.

If Manson was Trents keyboardist back then, it was clear they weren't getting off to a good start. Trent kept knocking over his keyboard and moshing him. We thought they might go fist to cuffs right there.

Neither Tool nor RAM were on the original line up. It's been a while let me think....It was Janes Addiction, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Living Colour, NIN, Fishbone, Violent Femmes, Body Count/Ice T, Butthole Surfers, and The Henry Rollins Band.

I saw Rage at the theme park in Omaha in the early 90's. Small venue. I also saw Pearl Jam, Smashing Pumpkins, and Red Hot Chili Peppers there. Even got to crowd surf Eddie Vedar.

I saw Tool and Helmet at a really small venue in Lawrence. It was at a place called The Outhouse. It was a shack in the middle of a field. The place was full of skin heads and no security. They had a circle mosh pit going and once you got into the pit they wouldn't let you out. They'd stand around the outside and shove you back in if you tried to get out. Didn't think we'd get out of there unscathed but somehow we did.

The Outhouse is still there outside Lawrence. Only now it's a raunchy BYOB strip joint.

Kevin,

I should trust my instincts or google, it was 94 that I missed out on, I thought I was right. Yes, my friends who went still rub it in.

Rich,

I saw Urge Overkill and Pearl Jam at the Century II in Wichita. There were small gaps between the speaker stacks and the stage. I waited for the right opportunity and crawled onto the stage and then on top the speaker stack. I was now 15 feet above the crowd and walking on the speakers toward center stage. The crowd went crazy. Vedder makes eye contact with me and nods his head in the direction of the crowd. He wanted me to dive. I hesitated for a brief moment and was ready to dive when three roadies attacked my left leg. The wind is knocked out of me as my ribs hit the side of the speakers. Headlocked and heading out the backdoor I whisper "water." They stop, take me to the paramedics and leave. I slam a 1/2 gallon of water and the paramedics say I can return to the concert through these doors. I got to keep the gallon jug, and I still have it to this day.

Great story Brett! Makes me want to tell my story about the time I broke my arm stage diving at the Gaye Bykers On Acid concert at the Bottle Neck in Lawrence. I still can't throw an overhead thumber or UD because of it.
