Do you guys switch up where you have the ice bowl each year? Or is this temp course the main one?

This is the 5th or 6th year we've had it at Oaklawn. For many years we had it in the woods at Oaklawn and used the Scout House to have our potluck. The bird watchers complained to the city that we were destroying the habitat. And the scout house was condemned. That course was really cool, but it sure is nice having the Oaklawn Community Center, especially with January weather.

You mean the Woods at OAK PARK is where you used to have it.

Wups, yeah that's what I meant.

Flagging the course Friday at 4pm. Also need to removed some brush, trim some limbs in a few places, and we need to whack down the tall grass around a few of the pins. Can anyone help? Bring loppers, gloves, something that we could swing to remove the tall dead grass.

For those not familiar with the course, there are some pics of it on DGCR from last year.

Note, some of these holes may look differently now due to the tornado damage.

Very cool, Scott! I didn't know you could do temp courses on DGCR. This will actually help me remember / visualize some of the tee locations. I've wanted to get into reviewing courses on dgcr, but I know if I start, I'll get sucked in and I don't any more time to give away. Glad you are doing it for Kansas courses. It really is the best resource out there for disc golf.

The first year for this course in 2008 had a few of the same holes: 9 through 15, I'm thinking. The others went through the sparse trees in the park and were fairly long. Also played a couple holes in the area to the South and came back up along the ball field. Then hole 17 was the current hole 1 and hole 18 is hole 18.

Yeah, it may look a little different this year. A few of the holes are a little tighter: maybe 4 and 8 and 15. Others seem to have been opened up a bit like 10 and 16. There is a large sandy area by old tees 3 and 4 where it looks like they drove a bunch of heavy equipment around. I think we'll be moving the tees around a bit, perhaps holes 3, 4, 12, 16. We'll go long on hole 11 again, so your 570 is right, the map is wrong. Tree gone on hole 12. Trees down on hole 18, but we'll play it anyway.

This course looks pretty cool. Might have to put a few more understable discs in my bag for this venture. lol

Everyone encouraged to bring a dish for the potluck. You can drop it by the kitchen in the morning. To those bringing baskets: you can leave them in front of the building and once a "basket crew" is assembled, they will drive them to the course, which should have yellow flags for pin locations. Registration will begin at 8:30am. Looks like the weather could be great or not so great Sunday. This event will happen rain or shine! No wimps, no whiners, hehe.

Flagged the course today. Trimmed a lot, removed a lot of brush and hanging thorns. Thanks to Jeff Laha, Don Schoenhofer, and Russ Trice for coming out.
Pins all very close to the same as last year. A few small changes to some tee locations:
-Hole 3: Tee is longer, so that it is not in the sand. Maybe only 60 feet longer than last year, but seems a lot longer than 300'. Probably is, we may have moved it back since the distance was measured.
-Hole 4: Tee is up the hill from the old location. Maybe about the same distance, but the angle is a little tougher. No longer blind though. Gentle hyzer or left handed flex shot.
-Hole 6: Just a few feet shorter.
-Hole 12: Much shorter, but tucked behind some nasty trees. Righty hyzer or very tall lefty hyzer. I think it is right at 300'.
-Hole 14: Moved the tee up a few feet. The sign messes with the gap and it has closed up some. We tried to trim out a 2nd straight gap that is very risky. The big hyzer is there, but it has to be big.
-Hole 16: Maybe 30 feet longer, but the fairway is wider. I wanted to cut a tree to make the over the top route more doable. Didn't have a saw with me and it was well after dark by the time we got here. The grass needs stomped down on the green.
-Hole 17: A couple feet to the right to make for a straighter shot.
-Hole 18: They were working on cutting up the downed trees today, but didn't get finished, so we'll still be playing around them. Moved the pin a few feet deeper to the edge since the guarding tree is now down. Don't get behind that tree or you'll have to throw over it.

Doesn't look like a tornado came through by any means. But it does seem like the rough is pretty rough. More than last year, I think. So if your style is aggressive or your accuracy is off, you may consider buying a few more mulligans.... cough, cough.... raffle tickets.

We'll play the "thorny lie rule" again this year. If there are thorns or trees in your throwing motion, you can take free relief backward from the pin on the line of play. Relief is to the nearest point of throwing motion relief, not as far back as desired. No lateral relief.

Thinking about trying to knock down the grass on 16's green and cutting the tree blocking the over the top route tomorrow. Not sure if I'll make it out there yet or not. Anyone else is welcome to have at it. I don't get off work until 3:30pm.

Anyone wanting to go out to Oaklawn for a bit at 4pm let me know. I still don't know if I'm going, but probably would if I know I can get done quickly.

I hope we can keep the forecast I'm seeing right now. 30% chance of rain overnight going down to 10% before play starts Sunday. Starting temp of 50 degrees up to a high of 64!
