Doo Dah 2011
I know we just finshed handing out the championship to Ben (Long live the king!), but we need to start on this as early as possible for 2011. Iqbal, thanks for TDing the event and dont take this the wrong way but...... I heard from many players this weekend that this was on of the most disorganized events they had ever attended. Wichita has a huge local following and loyal players that come in from OK and from the rest of Kansas for our tourneys. I have another vision...I would really like to see us GROW this tourney, and I feel the best way to do this is to allow Rusco to run, coordinate, organize and market our event. I believe that this could be an A-tier event that could be one of the midwest's premiere stops....I understand that running a tourney is difficult, long, thankless work, but I think we have the group here that could pull this off...

Re: Doo Dah 2011
I suggest you should attend the next board meeting and voice your suggestions for improving our tournaments. A more appropriate and constructive place to discuss this. I can tell you that I am very thankful to everyone who helped with the most recent tournament (including DD) because without them volunteering, you wouldn't have had what we had. I could give you a big list of what we would have missed. It would have seemed more "disorganized". I can't tell you how many hours of sleep I lost trying to plan for this event. While this has nothing to do with whether or not DD would run a good event, it is a necessity for a club of our size (2nd biggest local club in KS next to KCFDC) to maintain an adequate team of volunteers. When the job falls on just a few volunteers' shoulders... We also tried some different things this year. We're hoping if more new people get involved and learn what it is all about to run tournaments, we'll be more prepared for all of our future events.
Re: Doo Dah 2011
I don't get it Ronnie, why would they complain to you and not to me. I heard nothing but compliments all weekend long from every player I spoke with and the 20 or so volunteers who worked with me in unison for 3 days straight. Why would they congratulate me then complain to you? Do you handle tournament complaints? Would you like to? I just don't get it. To me, everyone seemed happy. Your description makes it sound like a turd. This was the most organized event I've ever been a part of. I received an enormous amount of help. This proves you can't satisfy everyone. Just play golf and quit complaining about the volunteers, or soon there won't be any.

Re: Doo Dah 2011
Ronnie, Thank you for the water @ oak! Iq, I have been to tourneys way more disorganized, and thought things ran pretty smooth after Saturday morning. thank you both for the effort put into making the Doo Dah an enjoyable experience!
Re: Doo Dah 2011
heard the complaints about being disorganized as well. Nobody had specific complaints, just blowing smoke. I don't know what more people expect, pre-reg list, players meeting, card stations, OB lines, 10 meter circles painted, maps, players pack with snacks, awards in an air conditioned building. Some one please point me to the disorganized part. Great job Iq

Re: Doo Dah 2011
I enjoyed the tournament. The only things I can see that should be addressed is online pre reg ended 1 week prior to event which I believe just caused you guys more work friday afternoon and saturday morning. The other is the string along the bank of the river. It was easy to move(intentionally or getting caught on a foot). I know that in the morning it was right along the bank on 6 by the basket and in the afternoon someone had moved it up about 3 feet from the top edge. It being that high cost me strokes and I am sure it did others even though we were up on top. Thanks to ACDGC for putting on the touenament.
Laying up.......That's for chickens!
Re: Doo Dah 2011
I didn't hear of any complaints. I was at a different course then Ben and Ronnie all weekend also. I wouldn't call this the most organized event I have ever been a part of. Likewise, I wouldn't call it the most unorganized event I have been part of. I really think that it fell someplace in the middle.
Some things I did observe that I wouldn't call organized.
1) No scorecards were filled out before Saturday morning. In fact there were no scorecards at the water center until well into the sign-up time. What is the point of doing online reg if you aren't going to use it to help you.
2) No cards were on the scorepoint Saturday morning. Once again why have prereg. if you aren't going to use it.
3) The players meeting and round both started late on Saturday morning. Another example of not being ready.
4) Hole 17 at Oak was an every card CTP for all the Ams on Saturday. They knew nothing about it and had to make it work on Sunday.
5) The scorecards were not calculated or shuffled until at least an hour and half after the rounds on Saturday. At this time, Adam, Kindy, Clay and myself went inside the water center and entered them into the computer.
6) Sunday the players couldn't take advantage of the water center. There was nobody to man it. That also meant very little water on the course.
7) Players waited for what seemed like forever to get their payout on Sunday.
8) I don't think that the TD of a B-tier should play. I think it would be very hard for a TD to do his job and play at the same time.
---Don't take that the wrong way Iqbal. Somebody had to have the nards to take the job. You were the only person to do it. I find it hard to believe in the biggest city in Kansas and the second biggest club that there are less then 2 hand fulls of people that were willing to give up their time and work. Many of them may have done a ton of work before the event to get the courses ready to play and that always goes unnoticed.
TO PULL OFF A SUCCESSFUL EVENT IT TAKES SEVERAL PEOPLE ALL WITH A SINGLE JOB! ONE PERSON CANNOT PULL OFF TWO JOBS!
Good things I noticed:
1) The payout was as good or better then it has ever been.
2) The courses looked great and played tough! I said at the awards that they are two of the better courses in the state and I meant that. They don't get they way for 1 weekend. It is a 365 job by somebody (Mike has a ton to do with it) to make sure this happens.
3) People really seemed happy. All the people I watched play and talked to during the two days were having a great time. That is the real reason that 85% of the people play this silly game.
4) Ceremony: I know that I had a good time before the payout talking on the Mic. I also had fun throwing out shirts during the payout (Sorry young hot girl if I offended you).
5) The fact that you get to use the Water Center is Killer! Most tourneys would kill to have a place like that to run the event from.
6) Turnout! I think it was a record for the event.

Re: Doo Dah 2011
Sorry, next meeting isn't scheduled yet. We want to get the Doo Dah report finalized first (still working on it).
Some of the concerns are very understandable. Scorecards didn't get printed until Saturday morning. String wasn't done until Friday evening. I made a list a good month or so before the event and I think I sent it out like 30 times (I was up late nearly every night sending multiple emails), updating jobs as I went. Most didn't get done until last minute. But like Smitty said, it's tough for just a few people to take care of that many jobs. For those who haven't run a tourney, you'd be surprised how much work it takes.
We do have to figure something different out with registration. Some people filled out 2 scorecards, some zero, some didn't sign the sign up sheets, pre-reg players didn't know they had to do paperwork, etc. We have 5 cross reference points: Participation form, sign up sheet, PDGA document, scorepoint scorecard, player scorecard. We had 5 different numbers for player count Didn't figure out till after the event how many we actually had. 121 was the record number, by the way.

Re: Doo Dah 2011
Well you've pinpointed your problem. The way that players have to fill out a scorecard, and write their name down on a sign up sheet, and fill out the participation form, is really way more than you need. There is no point to have a sign up sheet on the table if there was just someone to take their name and put it on a scorepoint card, then into the PDGA TD report. If you want to have everyone with their own card for 4 rounds, put their name on that too.Schoen-hopper wrote: We do have to figure something different out with registration. Cards should already be made for people that have pre-registered, so all you need to do on tournament day is some shuffling.
