Ace Race, 9/20/09, 1pm, Derby

Post by Schoen-hopper »

Sunday at 1pm, day after Hutchinson tourney. Plan is to play at Derby. Probably something like a SHORT safari version of 9 holes w/ 2 tees played twice each. Try to make it very fun for everybody. Oak Park could be a backup plan if the course gets crazy muddy.

I was planning on ordering 20-25 packs. Need to order soon. Who thinks they can come?

You don't want to say Lizard three times. It's kinda like that " Beetleguise" thing

If it helps any, the disc VERY closely resembles a Wizard....And the Pro D is more stable than the ESP.
Throw some D's on it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So this year its closer to a putter than a Mid range disc? Are we going to compansate the course for this? We could really make this a finess putt style course if we are getting putters for ace race. Even a couple of short 5-75 foot compleatly blind holes would be fun.

I agree. Let's make em short. Longer than 5' though. Shorter than the 180-240' recommended.

The course handles water much better this time of year as it wasn't too bad after over 5" in 4 days last week. So it's safe to say we'll have it at Derby.

As far as the course, I was thinking we could do a loop through the interior, not necesarily following the course. Shouldn't be tough to come up with some short technical holes.

Oh heck yea. We could just use holes 1-13 and never have to cross the road or go near the ponds, which would screw any one that might loose both discs. I think a perfect course would be play 1-10 skipping hole seven and shortining them up some and make them technical shots . then turn around and do the same thing backwards . there are some killer safarie shots out there and with the trees and like mike said making it shorter I think we could have one of the funnest ace races around.

Walked through and did a preliminary layout. Tried to make most of the holes really short, with trees in play. Should take more than 1 ace to win this thing! I'm thinking the optional side bet paying all metal will be a good addition too. Trying to keep the creek out of play, but that is tougher, since many of the buckets are close to the creek. Might have to fish a couple of bad shots. Ended up with more than 9 holes. I think this is fine and would only add to the fun. 36 throws of this lenth would probably take less than 90 minutes, so a few extra will still take less time than 1 round of regular golf.

Going to go back out there, play through it, and try to pick which ones to use. Maybe tonight or else next week. I'll post back the distances. Maybe draw a map over the existing Derby map and make a few copies. Might need a temp basket, depends if what I'm thinking will work.

Looked over the Derby ace race course again tonight. Here are some of my thoughts...

This years ace race is going to be different. Events will have to modify their courses as a majority of players cannot throw a putter far. I think the disc will turn out to be popular though. And I think the event could actually improve players' games as they will learn the mechanics involved with throwing a good putter upshot. Totally different than a driver or midrange upshot. Much better accuracy in the long run if you can be patient and learn the technique.

One good thing about the putter. Should be less shots finding the creek (which is dry right now throughout the entire park). I resisted the temptation of some cool shots crossing the creek for fear that their might be some unlucky shots have a tree knock them down into it. But there are a couple of holes where you could go long into the creek. I was really zipping them and wasn't going that close to the creek though. That's the beauty of throwing the putter. Good shots don't go that far past.

I'll post back with the details and hole lengths when I get a chance to measure them. I'm guessing that a great majority of them are between 100' & 150' foot. I had 2 aces just going through once (with a Wizard). Most of the holes follow the 2nd half of one of the regular holes, but a few of them don't really follow the normal fairway. I think there is a good balance of holes (righty/lefty, open/tight) for a course this short. Trees in play, but not a Blair Witch project! Several with 2 routes or more. Long & short tees for each hole. We'll play mostly the longer of the two on the orange flag first 2 times through and a super short layout from yellow tees for the next 2 laps.
