Mike, Wichita is not the only city in the state, or in the U.S. for that matter, that has trouble finding people to help with their courses. Emporia and Topeka each have 3 courses that require regular maintenance. I would bet there are less than a handful of people who help at either place. Norton, maybe two. Colby, one. Hutch, a few. Ransom, one? and so on and so on. If you continue, you'll have less. Go to the PDGA site and look at Tulsa's thread. They are always begging for people to help with the courses they're getting ready for WORLDS! It happens. You make the choice to volunteer, kudos to you. But don't just expect that others will.
And there will always be people who question what you do. We live in a democratic society............

There were a few people who helped out in preparing for the tournament. My appreciated should be noted to them. I work 50+ hours a week, go to school, and have a family. There are many people basically living at Oak Park that I was a little disappointed in. Such is life.
This is nothing new. The few people who serve on the board basically do all the things required to keep the club/courses up and going. I don't like to hear complaints from people who aren't willing to get involved. It's not the complaints so much as the attitude that is shown. If I wasn't on the board, the disrespect would probably be worse as everyone else has to much self respect to sink low enough to defend against most of the mindless attacking comments. I've gone into all of it before, but here's an example of the board just recently stepping up to bat for the club...
The Audubon society was going to get the baskets yanked out of the woods at Oak Park. We decided to attend their meetings and protest despite the fact that our city contact suggested that we do as they say and move the baskets at the cities expense. It's not over yet, but let's just say our protest was well heard and respected as well as the complaint about the disc golfers causing erosion in Oak Park. We'll continue to do what we have to, despite never even getting a "thanks".
If you have a legitimate suggestion, bring it to our monthly board meetings. The forum is not the place for it. Show some respect.

Good job Mike!! Thanks for the hard work and keeping Oak as is! Can't wait to play it in October..Schoen-hopper wrote:

Mike, I'm not picking on you. My point is this. You've made a conscious effort to be at the forefront of the disc golf movement in Wichita. That's awesome, expecially considering all you have going on in your personal life. I can relate. I haven't been able to throw a disc more than 30 foot in the last 9 months because I also work 40-50 hours per week, I travel 150 miles round-trip 2-3 times per week to be active in my kids' lives and have a social life I'm committed to. However, what you're doing is a choice. If you weren't doing what you do, would somebody else step-up? I hope so. But when you choose to do things like this, you also must remember it's a choice. And there will always be dissension. If you take it personally, maybe you shouldn't be so involved.
To ask that personal opinions not be aired here is ignoring the fact that this is a public forum. If you want that changed then maybe the ACDGC should start there own forum for members only. At least then you could control the content. Until then be glad you live in a country where everybody's opinion is valued.

I don't have a problem with opinions. I'm just suggesting that there is a better way of getting something done if people indeed desire a change.
I've tried to represent the players' perspectives when we have these meetings (ideas, votes, minutes, etc.). I'll ask around before hand about concerns and remember what people have expressed to me.
So I'm actually trying to bridge the gap, not make it bigger. It'd help though, if other people would also try to be constructive.

I was a member of the ACDGC for the last 5 years. I know first hand what Mike is talking about.. The ACDGC is full of a assortment of characters.. Most are cool, and fun people to play golf with.. BUT....When the politics of golf come into play this brings the ass hole in alote of people out.. Everyone has there own ideas and opinions, which most of the time they only voice within there own little groups.. Announcement are given at league for club meetings so all ideas and opinions can be discussed.. Nobody shows up! Then at the next league there will be announcements on new things voted on and passed.. Now people who didn't come to the meetings are complaining, bitching, and giving there ideas now.... Why weren't ya at the meeting to vote when it mattered? Now ya have people calling the club a dictatorship and so on.. This has gone on for years by the same people most the time about the same things
There would not even be courses in Wichita if the club had not saved them from being pulled by the city!! Wichita Disc Golf has done nothing but rise since the arrival of Bob and the rest of the ACDGC council. Oak turned into the awsome beautiful 18 hole course it is now, Herman being almost lost then saved, then redesigned as a championship quality course with 2 pads and 2 placements for each hole. Doo Dah rising from the ashes to become the 2nd biggest PDGA sanctioned tourny in the state Featuring both of Wichita awsome courses.... And after all this members still complain, bitch, and say just down right rude and uncalled for things.. Mike has a right to be pissed!!
There isn't 1 member in that club who could do a better job then the leaders in charge now!! If ya think im wrong prove it
Good luck
Its hard to motivate most of those guys unless they get somthing out of it
They would all show up if ya had a pound of weed and keg of beer

Actually they present there views at the meetings. They also (use) to give us an idea about whats going on at league.. ( Most of the time people don't listen during this time. There either talking amoungest themselves or still at there car. Even though they have yelled bring it inSandman wrote:So if the board hears the "players" perspective why dont the players hear the "boards" perspective??? From what I can tell the board makes many decisions "on the down low"...........
They also put out news letters, and many times I've seen them post ideas in discussion on the forum.. There voices just fall on deaf ears alote
I have never seen anything go down in Wichita that I didn't at least here about weeks before. People are just so not paying attention when they are being talked about.
You have enough food to feed everybody, but they can't eat if they don't come to the dinner table.

No conspiracy, I promise! If there is something you want discussed at a meeting and you can't make it, just let me know. It is a good idea, cause a lot of things we should approve before a decision is made.
I think we've just about beat this one to death. I'm sure it'll come up again sooner than later. How about a new dramatic topic?
What's everyone's favorite kind of cheese?

That would help since my wife works 3rd and most of our meetings start around 8:30p and run until 10:30 -11:00p. I let you know if anything comes to mind. Oh yeah let's get these birdwatchers off our butts, get the 3rd set of pin placements at HH, and start concentrating on OAK which is now heavily used, it's hard to even find parking most of the nights.
If it could kinda go in that order, we'd probably be on the right track and it would probably be a good thing for ICT disc golfers.
