Derby Course
Re: Derby Course
Holes 3-11 in the dark were rediculous, I think we spent 30 minutes on hole 9 alone, and we lost multiple discs as a group, count me out of league until it moves to weekends.

Re: Derby Course
Some groups were done in the daylight. Unfortunate we had to have a sixsome last night. It's always a good idea to make sure you don't have slow players if you are playing in a sixsome. I'd be glad to have someone running league earlier. There will just be that many more people showing up late. Who would like to do it?
Re: Derby Course
I guess we picked the wrong group, something tells me anyone woulda complained about a sixsome

Re: Derby Course
Bill said he did a bunch of cutting on hole 17. I'm guessing there will be a bigger landing area there now.
Before, or more likely, after league tomorrow, I'm going to re-flag the course. Different from Herman Hill, Oak Park, & Colwich, the existing tees will be all blue. Then I'm going to put another set of red flags in for a very short configuration. This is closer to in line with PDGA standards (Blue= 950 rated Advanced, Red= 850 rated Rec/ Int.) We'll still play the blues for league, but the shorter tees will make the course less intimidating for beginners.
We need to think about some options for tees. Derby isn't coughing up the dough. Landscape timbers pounding in flush with rebar is one idea. Some of these tee areas have erosion issues. Perhaps buried stone blocks would work better? That is a pretty cheap solution. Maybe color them blue and red w/ spray paint? The flags are just temporary as they get mowed during summer season.

Re: Derby Course
I am aware that this topic is old but, I'll say this again: Hole 9 @ Derby is the dumbest, most ridiculous joke for a hole I've ever played. EVER. It's pointless.

Re: Derby Course
I think if it had a couple of routes cleared up some (one close to the creek and one higher up) it'd be a great 2 shot hole. That's something that's extremely lacking in disc golf hole design. As it is, I'd agree that since there isn't a visually definable route, the hole isn't fair. I saw some hedge trees that were cut at the ground level that were sprouting thorn tentacles 5 foot tall! These things don't die unless poisoned.

Re: Derby Course
Short tee flags (red) have been put in. I didn't have the wheel, but I'd say they average about 100' shorter. This should help with players from Derby trying disc golf for the first time. This is what the city of Derby wants: more locals playing. So hopefully this will make the course less discouraging between the heavily wooded shots & the water holes. Hole 18 is a good 200' shorter. The only way I could get the flags in was on both sides of the road, so the tee is 20' wide! And there is a large limb that needs to come out that pretty much blocks everything on the right side.
Blue flags were put in for the long tees. Most are right in front of the signs. Hole 11 is down where everyone has been throwing. Kind of awkward footing there, I was looking at moving it 10' farther down. But then the hole is a straight or flex shot rather than a hyzer. Also, hole 14 & 15 are parallel to the sign rather than in front. On 15, the footing is more level where the flags are and this also brings the only tree a little more in play. Drop Zone was remarked on 17. That hole is cleared up considerably, which should help some with the small landing area problem.

Re: Derby Course
went to derby today with rick. the course looks great bill and any others who have been working out there. Wondering why the big huge bush on six was cut down though that bush is what made that hole hard and challenging? the wood pile on seven sure is getting smaller. great job.. still think hole 9 is the dumbest most unfair hole of all of kansas. but the place does look good.

Re: Derby Course
Heard similar sentiments. Even before it was said that they would cut down everything on hole 6. I said "why"? Heard the left side of the creek has been cleared on 9. Which is OB. While in the "fairway" there is no fairway. Or at least it is completely blocked about 2/3 of the way down. Bill said there is a hedge tree coming out that will make a gap there. Would be nice if someone could communicate "which" trees to take out. But overall, so much better, right? Can you imagine trying to play back there before all this was cleared out?

Re: Derby Course
we did play back there before it was all cleared out.. yes alot of it is better. but some areas they went to far on the clearing like on #6. I thought it looked bare on the (other Side) of the creek on #9. whats up with that? all that work they did to clear out the OB? lol I really wish some one would rethink Both #9 and #17. I know not much can be done with 17 so its a Moot subject but #9 is just dumb. It one of those you stand at the pad and scratch your head and mutter WTF over and over till you let it rip right down the middle of the fareway just to hit a tree. shot 2 another tree, shot 3 another tree. Ok I'll walk away now. muttering dumb dumb dumb ..lol

Re: Derby Course
Forgot to mention it at league tonight: league is at Derby next Tuesday, April 13th.
Re: Derby Course
OK so it's been a while since this post, but I want to comment anyway. Derby is looking super. They just mowed and planted new grass again.
Yes, hole 6 was cleared out too much, but we can fix that by moving the Teepad to the south a little.
Hole 17 could be tee'd from the drop zone, if you don't like the D on it. Personally I really don't like it, I am sidearm so I play like a lefty. I have no problems when we play the coarse backwards. (fun)
Hole 9 does not need changed, just the rule about over the creek on it. There is plenty of room and it DOES NOT interfere with hole #5's fairway. It is a challage and ridulous hole, but come on, we don't need anymore holes that every PRO can park. They have to fight like the rest of us just to make par, so it's a great hole.
I play here alot, I see tons of people from Derby (without bags) so there is a ton of interest. I wished the city could see this so they would put the teepads in.

Re: Derby Course
Derby report
The place was looking gorgeous last night. I had not seen it since the work they did on the NW end.
-They took out the tree in the middle of the gap on hole 2, which has opened that hole up considerably. I know they had no choice: the tree was split and being held together with rope.
-Yeah the cleared up hole 6,7,8,9 a lot. Hole 6 is the only hole a little worse for it. Overall, it looks so much better. The straight gap on hole 8 is more plausible now. First time I got to play hole 7. The one tree they left is trimmed just right so the shot is fair. It is still kind of like holes 12 & 14: a little too long to birdie and you really screwed up if you bogey. But also like those holes, it has some cool features. I'm not sure it would be good to change this one for these reasons: Nice shady tee and cool shot out of the trees + if you push the pin back any further, you may run into problems with that playground. Shots will end up there. Any way 6's basket could be moved to the right? I saw the longer left, but like you say, we'd need to move 7's pad. And there are already a ton of severe righty holes on the course.
-Hole 5 is a little more difficult than you give it credit for. Our pro cali took a 5 on it last night with a tail wind. The OB creek on the left makes it the best hole on the course in my opinion. A longer placement would be a good par 4, but the short is already perfect. This hole might be just a little low ceiling off the tee though.
-Hole 9: They cut a lot of small stuff out, which helps a lot. But they have NOT cut the big dead hedge tree. I think it needs to come out because with as much trimming as they have done on the left (culvert looks great by the way, but could confuse the OB line a little), the hole misleads people to think that is the fairway. Very risky route!
-Hole 14: Very unlevel tee that is getting played from the wrong spot. My flags are already gone throughout the course. Derby is seeing a ton of its own people playing this course. I see them every time I'm out there. We should push them to follow through with their promise to install tees.
-Hole 18: Ever time I play this I see great drives getting punished. With as narrow and long as this hole is and with as nasty the thick shule is on the sides, the trees on this hole should be trimmed up as much as possible. They could obviously get a truck in there. At least for the first half of the hole. It's too low.
-A few baskets still need to be level. They very much effect putts with the angle in combination with the lack of nubs.

Re: Derby Course
I found a pair of Prescription black framed GANT glasses last time I was out to Derby. In case any fellow Disc Golfer lost them. I have them.
I also lost a pair of Oakley Flat Black Monster Dog shades out there.
