Oak Park
Re: Oak Park
I used to live by Oak & started picking up trash every time I was out. I'm sure it does not come from league golfers; we know better. If you're looking for someone to yell at, go get the casual golfers. I've been playing behind groups of casual players before & watched them throw their empties on the ground when there is a trash can nearby. I would just pick them up because its not gonna do any good to go tell a drunk guy that he's being rude & inconsiderate. I continue to pick up trash that I see laying on the course every time I play. I've also scolded anybody in my group who attempts to litter. It's the best we can do.

Re: Oak Park
Noon on Sunday?
There is a good chance I'll be working both Saturday & Sunday. Good chance I'll be working 1:30 or later on Sunday. So I'm not sure what time I can help with the course, if at all this weekend. I'll try to come out after work on Sunday.
A guy named Chris brought us some limestone at league today. We may get more. The size of these stones looked good for a small retaining wall next to 6's short tee. As of now, Josh Hull plans to do this work around noon on Sunday. Could change between now & then and I wouldn't know. But he can help get things organized as far as working on the rest of the course.
I'm proposing Sunday because of the tournament in Emporia on Saturday. Truth is that a good time is whenever 2 or more people can get together with a pickup truck, some shovels, and maybe a rake. Talk to each other and make it happen. If nothing happens between now and then, plan on working Sunday if you can. Here's what needs done.
*Pavers need buried. Hole 18 short and another. Maybe #9 blue? These things go in 3 wide and 1 or 2 rows deep. There's around 25 of these left, so 2 more tees ought to get it.
*Woodchips. Thick through holes 1 through 7. 18 & Practice basket would be nice as well. Not a ton of chips here, so we might need more to get everything.
*Dirt. Huge pile of this! I'd suggest taking care of the pavers first and then going through the entire course and building up areas before and after tees (sides don't matter, except if trying to grow grass there). The level should be at least as high as the tess because this will pack down over time & play. Another thing to do with the dirt is to put in on the baskets that are on hillsides. 12, 15, (17's already done), others? Take a look. Sometimes woodchips work better on greens that have some dirt to mix in with it (underneath). Perhaps 18's green & practice bucket area?
*Seeding. Josh has the seed. After the dirt is thrown down, seed it thoroughly. Concentrate on priority areas, but it needs to be fairly thick to make any difference. We can get more seed.

Re: Oak Park
Josh got tee #6 done and looks good. He, Buddy, & Jeff showed up, but had nobody with a truck to make the rest of the work happen. Tons of golfers, including plenty with trucks came by, but just for playing golf.
We need to make this happen, and soon! We had the stuff delivered, now let's get it on the ground. Pavers buried on holes 9 short, maybe 10 short, & 18 short, followed by dirt throughout the course, then seed raked in, and chips holes 1 through 7, or until they run out.
When does everyone want to get this done? Thursday before league? Wednesday? Weather is absolutely perfect. I'm working 7 days a week, but don't want to keep showing if it's not happening. We need to get this grass down before the next rain. Kelly Parsons told me he'd call to get this done this week. I'll let you know what he says.

Re: Oak Park
Cool, thanks Randy. I'll pick up some from the clubhouse tomorrow at league. The X factor is if I have to stay late at work on Thursday. So, if you can come to league tomorrow, I could give you the shovels then. I'm sure there will be some people there to help at that time.
Re: Oak Park
Just want to say that today was my second time playing at this course and i think its great! Also tried Herman Hill for the first time too. Not too shabby!! I might go up there more often.

Re: Oak Park
This is happening, so come out to Oak on Thursday to help get the course in better shape. If people want to work on it tomorrow, that is cool too. Read above for what needs to be done. Basically, one crew should bury the rest of the remaining pavers (tees 18s, 9s, 10s). Another crew can throw chips down thick where needed on holes 1 through 7. Probably won't have enough to get all that, but we can get more delivered. Whoever is done first can start dumping dirt where needed throughout the course. Areas include next to tees that have a drop off in front or behind, pins with erosion issues, and tees with recently planted pavers. Thicker is better with the dirt. We'll seed after the dirt is down. We'll also be finding some good locations to put some limestone in. Not sure they are big enough to help much with 17/18, but they do make some of the tees look nice.

Re: Oak Park
I gotta work all weekend. So I can't help organize efforts at Colwich or Oak Park. If you can help, post here, or PM your contact info. I'll do my best to get you in touch with whomever can head things off. That would be Bill at Colwich. At Oak, what's needed has been made plain. They spread most of the chips tonight, but the pavers buried and dirt spread still needs to happen.

I showed up for the workday on Thursday, but had no tools and no truck. We need to get that dirt on the course before I ask the city for any more chips. Chime in if you can help.

Re: Oak Park
Progress at Oak Park has stalled due to lack of help. We need to get those limestone blocks in the ground before they run off. Tee 6 short and 18 long are ideal locations for a small retaining wall right next to the tee. Josh Hull was heading this up, but after someone tore out all the work he had done, he said he wouldn't do this by himself. If someone wants to head this up, go right ahead. If you contact me, I can get you in contact with Josh.
Other thing for now is getting those "pavers" and dirt in the ground. Certain tees and pins throughout the course could use some dirt. 17 short tee, 9 long tee, practice pin, probably several other locations. We'll seed after that is done and ask for more chips after that. The rain is coming, we're going to need them.

Re: Oak Park
pretty useless putting down chips they just float away every time it rains. why dont they use a pea gravel or some thing that will stay put?

Re: Oak Park
Were wanting to use them mostly in the wooded areas. They last a long time there. They make a big difference! And it looks good too. If you don't want to help that's fine. But what do we gain by telling people their efforts are useless? They are not. It's sad we can't do more course maintenance than we do, but if we stop fixing the place up before the Doo Dah, this place will be in bad shape all year.

First of all mike bite me . Don't put words in my mouth I never said that peoples efforts are useless i said the wood chips are. The basket on hole 2, 8 and 11 are good examples of places where wood chips dont work . One good rain and the wood chips all float into a bunch of little piles . Hole eleven needs to be raised about a foot so that when it floods the area around the basket dryes first and there isn't a big puddel or Mud hole all around it. . The work done isn't useless just the equipment used is on those holes. the wood chips do work well on holes like 1, 5 and 7 and they also look great if enough is put down.
