Southwestern
Re: Southwestern
Bangrrr and I are going to go down to the NT tournament at the lodge tommorow, if anybody put any disc in the drink holla at us and we will see if they have it. Also like I said I am going to try to get out tommorow afternoon at the course and try to get some mowing done, If I don't get time depending on the weather Monday my father and I are going to go out and do some more mowing so hopefully we can spray sometime next week. We should have six 50 gallons barrels ready by then so we can bring out to the course. You all should know bangrrr's number and if not here is my number so give me a holla if you have any discs that needs to be picked up at the lodge.

Re: Southwestern
I went out to check out the course today. Buley went out there early this morning and finished mowing all of the fairways. He has also put in 7 baskets from Cherry Street. THERE ARE BASKETS PEOPLE! Whoo hoo! As soon as Harvey gets his baskets back from the 4-20 event we will have all 9 baskets in plus some alts.
There is still some work that needs to be done, but the course is looking great. I'm going to head back out sometime today and make a list of things that still need to be done.

Re: Southwestern
I am guessing that I have the first lost disc.....a bright orange esp surge on hole 5 down the right side of the fairway. Man, this could be a disc eating course.

Re: Southwestern
I played the seven holes this evening. I was 4 up. I would like to give my thoughts on the holes in case anyone cares.
Hole 1. Good hole, really wish there was just a little more room in the overhead so I can get the S shot up better.
Hole 2. Good hole, very tough with a south wind.
Hole 3. Fun hole, not as long as I thought from the short tee pad.
Hole 4. Easily the best tunnel I have ever played.
Hole 5. Disc eater, really could use a spotter.
Hole 6. Tough slight anheiser, the wind made it tough. Fun hole.
Hole 7. This is the only hole that I would change, there are 2 cedar trees right in the middle of the fairway. If these were moved there would be a gut shot, but the basket would still have some protection. As it is, there is no defined route. Maybe I will see it different after I play it with a better golfer, we will see.
I really enjoyed this course and look forward to playing it more often. Is the chain gonna stay locked most all the time or not?

Re: Southwestern
Hole 1 is sick! It is a 2 shot hole. Something that most courses in Kansas are missing.
Hole 4 can be a disc eater, my guess is that you are shorter and closer to the fairway then you think.
Hole 7 is killer from the alt. tee. From the tee you played, my guess is that it probably needs a little work.
We are planning on playing all the holes late Saturday afternoon. I will give you a call, before we head out.

Re: Southwestern
Josh is starting a list. I don't know what he has, but here are a few things I see that need to be done.
Hole 1 alt. under the Rosebud tree could use a little trimming.
Hole 2 Looks pretty good.
Hole 3 There are some broken branches in the Cedar behind the basket that need trimmed out.
Hole 4 Is perfect, Burley did a super job on it.
Hole 5 I would like to see a down the pipe route trimmed out. It wouldn't be the shot that people would take, but it may be tempting. Also, the temp. pin needs cleaned up.
Hole 6 The 2 trees that Harv and Rich took all the branches off of need to be taken out. The look like total crap! The hole also plays much different now. It is now a hyzer for most people.
Hole 7 Burley trimmed the crap out of it also. I wouldn't be against taking the 2 trees out of the middle. It would make the hole look much better and it would also play much better.
Hole 8 Cedar blocking the alt. basket should probably go.
Hole 9 We use to always have OB to the left. I kind of like the idea of just taking out all the little brush and playing it safe.

Re: Southwestern
It's true. I did make a list.
The course looks pretty dang good for the most part, but I think with a little work it could be better. Most of the things that I've noted would most likely make finding your disc a little easier. Those Cedar trees are disc eaters and in some areas it gets pretty hairy, particularly the cedars E. of 7s fairway. Chris Tyler and I thought it might be a good idea to trim/clear some of the cedars back in that area. Not so much that it would make the hole play easier...you would still have a tough up shot if your disc went into the cedars, but at least you wouldn't be in "cedar prison". It is possible that by opening up the fairway by removing a cedar tree would prevent going to "prison".
Anyway, in addition to Smitty's thoughts, here are some ideas for course improvement:
hole 1: The grass in the cedars trees NE of the bucket is pretty hairy.
hole 3: the grass on the hill W of the bucket could stand a trim.
hole 7 & 8: Again the grass is pretty tall in the cedars between the two fairways
hole 9: mow/weedeat S of fairway
none of this needs to happen immediately, but it would make the course look nicer and easier to locate your disc if the grass was shorter
I also think it would be nice if the lower branches of the cedar trees in and along the fairways were trimmed 2-3 ft from the ground. Again, this could make locating a disc a little easier. That is if you are not in the tree. Finding a disc at the SC course can be a real pain somtimes.
I think Chris and I are going to head out to do a little work tomorrow...all 9 buckets will be in tomorrow as well.

Re: Southwestern
How much grass is going to grow under the cedars after you trim them up? Someone will then have to mow or weed-eat under them.
I just don't think that it is needed.
If I was to do anything, it would be get rid of a few here and there, so you can walk around and look for your disc.
Hole 5 needs the most work, tall grass on both sides of the fairway.
We also need to make some signs to hang on the fence by basket 7.
Do Not Destroy the Fence!
Use a stick to slide your disc to the edge.
Then use your fingers to lift it out.
We really don't want people climbing that fence or pulling up on the corners of it. We could even get a long pole of some kind and just leave it laying along the fence.

Re: Southwestern
This afternoon I did some tree trimming on hole 1 Alt, Hole 4 Alt, and Hole 5. There was one tree on hole 5 that looked like it had never been pruned...
Tomorrow Josh and I are going to target some small cedars that don't need to be around, mainly on hole 7 and 8.

Re: Southwestern
I could get Rusco to make us some vinyl to make signs out of. We could get some light weight metal and just wire the signs to the fence. It could save us trouble down the road.
Take out the tree on 8 alt.

Re: Southwestern
I am a little concerned that the "powers that be" might frown upon cutting down a lot of trees on the course. I spoke to Jeff Gile and he has requested that we mark the trees that we would like to have removed. When we get his stamp of approval we can move forward.
I am going out there tomorrow to mark trees that some have suggested that we remove.
I just don't want to give the college any reason to be pissed at us. Better to play a little politics and to keep the college in the loop.

Re: Southwestern
Those three stumps that needed removed have been removed. I may need to work on them alittle more to make sure they are as flush with the ground as possible so mowers will not be hampered by them.

Ok, thoughts now that we have all played out there....Lets get some more thoughts on what needs to be done out there....
Trees in 7s fairway SUCK....
Trees in 7s fairway SUCK....
Throw some D's on it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Re: Southwestern
I played with Harv tonite. That was perfect, because I was able to pick his brain a little.
Here is what I think.
Hole 1
There are a ton of little (3 foot tall) Cedars along the right side of the fairway that should be taken out. All the other type trees should be trimmed atleast 6 foot high. It will make it easier to find discs and maintain holes 1/5.
There are some Cedars to the left of the pin that can be removed also. Then the others can grow bigger. It will not take away from the hole. The edges should be left alone, and deeper in the rough should be removed.
Hole 2
Once again there are some Cedars deep and to the right that should be removed .
Hole 3
Is almost perfect! It could be mowed a litle higher on the hill, other then that it is great.
Hole 4
GOOOD from both pads.
The alt. pad will grow closed making a great shot by the end of summer. What ever you do, do not trim the first two Cedars. The shot use to be a high hyzer. If that gap grows closed you will be forced to cheat the inside of the fairway and make a putt.
Hole 5
Looks pretty good. There is 1 Hedge tree off the tee, that is going to give us some troubles and should be taken out.
I also don't really care for the chop job on the Cedar. I know it took a ton of work, and will make it easier to find discs. My biggest problem is that it is to easy to lay-up from that Cedar now. Before if you were in it, you were going to get a bonus stroke.
Hole 6
Is as good as it is going to get. I think we could do some selective removal of Cedars behind 7's tee. Only enough to make it easier to find a disc. Chris Tyler and I did some work with my loppers tonite and you can walk around in the mess. It needs to stay pretty thick to protect our heads from bad drives.
Hole 7
I really don't like the 2 Cedars in the fairway.
I think if you take them out, people will then try the up the middle shot. As it is now, if you don't throw 300 you are screwed! Even if you take them out, the shot and the penalty are the same. The edges of the fairway are ROUGH! With those 2 gone, people have a choice to lay-up. Most people avoid the fairway all together, which is a shame. Kind of reminds me of hole 2 at Cherry. Very few people go up the middle, because there is trouble.
Hole 8
Alt pin needs a Cedar removed for sure.
There is also a Hedge growing up in the middle of the fairway from the top of the hill. You can see it in the hole. We should try to figure out which one it is, and get rid of it also.
What is the rule on the fence? OB, Bunker or Safe?
Hole 9
I think the Cedar to the North of the basket should be gone. I trimmed it back tonite, but it is still right on the basket.
Are we going to put the OB line back up? Sure makes it a harder hyzer.

Re: Southwestern
Last night Smitty and I talked about holding a meeting about future improvements to the course. Smitty has made some good suggestions in terms of course improvement, but it might be good to hold a meeting so that everyone can voice their opinion. I say this because there has been some disagreements, particulary over the possible removal of the two cedars on hole 7. In addition, there has been some dissent over the trimming of the cedar on hole 5. In order to aviod conflict within our club I think it would be good to meet before we procede with any further changes. Furthermore, a meeting would be a good way for us to formulate a master plan to present to the college. As of now we are on good terms. Keeping them in the loop will be the best way to ensure that we stay that way.
As for the acutual meeting, I would be more than happy to host this at my place. There is a large lobby that will accomidate a large group and I can even provide some chicken wings (I have a ton of food stipend money left and I'm trying to get rid of it).
I am pretty busy until May 8th, but I can do it anytime after that. How does Sunday, May 11th @ 1pm sound? I don't think there are any tournaments that day.
