I've heard of soaking discs in boiling water to reverse deterioration of stability. Never tried it yet though.

What other crazy stuff have people been doing to their plastic?

Does anyone else cut the flashing off of new discs? Some discs are worse than others. They have a flashing bead along the bottom and front of the rim. It's bothersome to grip. You got to have a super sharp knife to cut it off evenly without gouging the disc. Maybe sanding it off would be best?

Is that legal?

I don't see why it would be illegal. Unless the flight plate was cut through. Hitting trees has a similar effect.

C. Players may not make post-production
modification of discs which alter their
original flight characteristics. This rule
does not forbid inevitable wear and tear
from usage during play or the moderate
sanding of discs to smooth molding
imperfections or scrape marks. Discs
excessively sanded or painted with a
material of detectable thickness are
illegal. See sections 802.01 D, E and F.

Seems open to interpretation, moderate is an ambiguos term. I know some moderate drinkers who drink 3-4 beers and others who drink 8-12, but yet they're both moderate.

Taking the flashing off is not a modification. Taking the bead off, that's a modification.

The first one just takes care of the sloppy trim job at the factory. The second would change the flight characteristics.

I recieved a FLX Surge Yesterday at the ponca tourney and when i got home i was just holding it in my hand and noticed that on the inside rim about half the way around the disc it has a severely sharp flashing the other half is nice and smooth. How should i go about removing this edge?

Sharp on a FLX? Every now and again I recieve a disc that the machine missed .Cleaning off a missed flashing is not modification .It is just common sense I use a sharp knife,but I don`t see why a disposable razor would`nt work as well

Tried the disposable razor and it didnt work well for me. So i ended up sanding the gouges the razor took out. Also had to remove the stamp as well. It looks pretty cool but i might try to put some dye on it. Does anybody know what type of dye to use and where to get it at?

You can get Rit dye at several places. Grocery store, Walmart, craft store, etc.

I figured a knife would be the thing leaving gouges, depending on the hand cutting it. Having the plastic guard on the razor, as long as you don't put too much pressure on it, keeps the slicing nice and even, especially if the flashing is all the way around the rim. Callus removers work well too.


I don't think I've ever had any flashing problems on any Discraft disc I've had. Maybe a couple of Z Wasps have been close, but never uncomfortable enough to do anything about it.


The all around safest way to get rid of nicks, scratches, flashing, is to rub it back and forth on carpet or a rug. Comes out smooth, and is very effective.

Ok, Joshie......There are two really good ways to remove excess flash from injection molded plastic parts. One, a REALLY sharp knife and a delicate touch. Two a one inch paint scraper(preferably a Red Devil with the wood looking plastic handle) with the proper technique will remove it and not hurt your discs. I'll see if I can dig a knife out for you and find a scraper around here and bring them both on Wednesday.
