Competitor's Temper Tantrum's??

Do they affect you? Is it a strategy? How do you handle a competitors temper tantrum? Are there players you hope you don't get paired with cause you know you'll be subjected to at least one major blow up during the round?

Three out of five players on our card last week had MAJOR blow ups! For me, depending on the person, I'll either fuel the fire or do my best to ignore it. I'd much rather yell "shut the F up before I give you something to cry about". Then kick'em square in the jimmy!

Nikko was the worst I've ever had to play with. I just flat out called BS on him and then he apologized. I'd have to imagine that as his game has improved & his tournament experience increased, he is doing better with this.

Maybe I overreacted to that putt spitting. But, in all fairness I was more or less over it by the time we were on the next hole.

You're right. I get mad all the time. I mostly get mad at you for getting mad. I'm kidding of course! Your temper tantrums are some of my favorites! I'll probably never get to witness a big boned fella body slam himself again!

I,ve been playing for twenty years and have seen a lions share of uncontrolable outburst from several competitors.
Seen disc impaled on broken tee signs,witnessed disc ripped in half ( DX days ). Seen whole golf bag thrown into a lake.
I even seen a player catch his disc on fire. Salina has had a number of Hot Heads over the years, ( Austin in no way is the first ) and I respect and appreciate each one of them. We are all different and deal with our frustrations in different ways.
Alot of people would be surprised to know that on several occasions my poor tournament play gets the best of me and creates a monster inside waiting to get out. My release............ More then once I,ve drove home dissapointed from a tournament and started chucking disc out the car window. "I,m never going to play again"! Yea right. ( I,m sure many a farmer scratched his head over a cyclone or viper wedged in his corn row.) Once I threw at least five new disc into the heart of Lakewoods pond. One player had to quit playing "Doctors orders" His blood pressure created a twenty foot radius around him, we all cleared out! Every one of us get pissed-off!

I,ve found a good way to deal with my bottled up anger/rage. I hold it in until I can be alone, then I go to a hole where it,s just me and a fairway ,just me and a basket, and I work my shots over and over and over. Sometimes even after it gets dark out. My muscles ache, my brains cooked, but when I leave my monster is whooped. " Tommorow is a new day.........full of good breaks and bad, make the most of it when your at the plate and deal with your beast as you see fit, just try to be mindful of your fellow partners." The wise words of Power Hyzer Phil mid round when golf was,nt working out ,
" I Think ..........I,m going home" ......... and he did.

As we grow up all of us come up with different mechanisms for dealing with frustration. Temper tantrums are common in the Open division amongst some of the best players....Kevin McCoy, Steve Rico, Nikko Locastro were among the worst. I know that Steve was put on probation after an incident at the KC wide Open one year, and I think that it has caught up with Nikko now as well. Calling a competitor for courtesy violations is not pleasant, but it can serve as a wake up call. Witnessing a loss of control can be funny(I love the body slams too! Austin) but it can also hurt YOUR game. If a member of your group just can't hold it together let them know that it is bothering you and ask them to stop. If they don't....Warn them and or stroke them. Since the typical cause of the acting out is disappointment with their own play, a warning that they are hurting your game is usually all it takes. I've come to appreciate how destructive the loss of control can be...for example, Barry hits his mini hard enough to break his hand..after shooting the hot round at the Memorial this year! LOL!
Cultivating the Zen "take each shot as it comes" attitude will help to keep a minor problem or bad shot from becoming a game ender or becoming a problem for those around you.
I still get pissed when I make a mistake, but I try consciously to avoid allowing one shot to effect the next....This has really helped my game over the years.

I don't know about competitor's losing tempers, but losing my own definitely distracted me. It's a tough admission, but I would get so angry at myself that I couldn't play well in any tournaments and couldn't play a single hole without getting upset about something. It just wasn't fun, and a waste of money. After the 2010 GBO, I told E-Mac I was retired from tournaments. What I meant was more of a furlough from tournaments until I can get better control over self and game. So far, I have stuck to it. I will return to playing tournaments, but not until I feel ready.

I try and ignore it. I play with an ipod now so I just put the other earphone in and walk away for the cry baby. Do i get mad you bet. Usually comes after missing that 2-3rd 20 foot putt to make a move on lead. I have slammed disc into my bag, kicked my bag. This was early in my tournment years. Now i suck it in and try to leave it on the hole.

Nikko I have seen kick baskets slam his bag into a tree. Kick over piles of sticks. This all in one round while watching this years Vibram. Sure I know it's his job and ya missing that putt or shanking a drive could possiably cost him a few hundered. He is a PROFESSIONAL disc golfer he should act like one. JMHO He is a great player and person. He does alot for the sport but those actions are no inexcuseable. Im surprised he dosen't get called on them. Brinster used to pitch fits all the time too
