Courses around KC

Post by Schoen-hopper »

Looking to play some golf Monday & Tues and check out some courses I haven't got to play yet.

Monday I'll hit up either SMP or Down Under and then a couple rounds at WW.
Tues probably SMP or DU (whichever not played Monday) and then on to Leavenworth & Atchison.

Is Leavenworth still ok to play Kevin? How is Atchison? The 18 holer is on the PDGA directory. Where is the 9 holer? Since it's in the same park, I guess it shouldn't be difficult to find. Maps?

Anyone ever play Baldwin City? That looks like a cool place. Maybe there will be a tourney this spring.
What about Pomona? Are there 2 courses there? One pay to play, one free? Only one on the directory. Heard one was cool, the other not very, but can't remember which was which.

Give me a ring if you'd like to hit up a round. 316-250-1967 .

The 9 holer at Atchison is in a deeper part of the park. There's a curvy one-way road that you have to drive around the park which if you follow, you will eventually come upon the 9 hole course. I believe there's a sign at the 18 hole course showing both layouts.

On the south side of the park (as well as underneath of it) there's an underground military bunker complex surrounded by razor wire which comes into play on both courses, but moreso on the 9 holer. Obviously if your disc goes over it consider it gone.

Jackson Park Aerial View

Where it says Jackson Park on there, thats the 18 hole course. The 9 holer is in that ear shaped area halfway between 'Union Pacific' and 'US Miltary Reservation'.

SMP is decent, but I wouldn't call it great. Starts out good, but the back nine gets a bit monotonous.

I thought I would have a computer at the motel, but didn't. So I didn't see your replies until after my drive home from KC.

Pretty much stuck to the plan. Played Shawnee Mission on Monday morning. Not a bad course; better than I expected. The holes made pretty good use of the sparse trees out there. Loved hole 7. I think the tee recently moved on this one making it shorter, so I never played the longer version, which was probably a legit par 3.5 or 4. What I liked about this hole was how the low hanging trees on the right side of the green blocked all but the perfectly executed low skip shots. You had to go around to the left. The fairway on the high side, which was harder to hit, was the sweet spot of the fairway and rewarded the player with a much easier 2nd shot. Also liked 9 & 12 & a few others. I don't think all the shots are the same out there, but there are many types of holes that weren't used. No dog legs, no par 4's (9 was close, at least par 3.5), not many high route shots. Perhaps more rough in play and pins closer to the trees/ rough areas would have given the course less of the open feel. Overall pretty enjoyable; loved the rolling hills and scenic feel to the park. The worst thing about the course was easily the tees. Muddy on a slope: every single ones of these was a big safety hazard. You couldn't throw on them without seriously risking a fall. Concrete would be very nice, but even some gravel would help tons.

Got a couple of rounds in at the WW. Love hole #1! #12's new placement to the left is pretty crazy. I don't remember the straight route being that open. The lefty shot, and less so, the righty shot through the straight gap make this one easier. But it isn't too easy! I sailed one straight past the pin and couldn't get back up the hill for the par. The OB street is lurking on the left...

Today, after endless hours at the Neb Furny-Mart, I headed up to Leavenworth to try to play before the sun set. I missed the turn for the campus, even with carefully written instructions printed. I didn't have time to turn back and hit Atchison so I kept going.

Ended up getting all 27 in at Atchison in less than 90 minutes. Not a flat hole on either course! The wind was howling out of the North this afternoon at 20+mph pretty steady. The view from the top of the 9 holer was killer. The Missouri River is just huge and the wind blowing up this cliff and through the trees was making some incredible noise.

I couldn't remember if the park road (and across) was OB or not. It comes into play on a good number of holes and would change up the hole strategy if it is OB. Like SMP, this course had dangerous tees. Not quite as muddy, but more sloped. Concrete tees will be really nice. On the 18 holer, the course starts out with 7 short holes. The downhill headwind shots were perfect for the pro pig. If the road is OB, you need some serious brakes. Holes 1 & 4, you can't see the basket and you may throw to the wrong one if you don't run up and look. Hole 8 was AWESOME! Downhill 520' shot down the park road with trees on both sides. With a big drive, this is 2-able, but leave the fairway (difficult not to) and kiss a 3 goodbye. Very cool feel to this beauty of a hole. Hole 10 & 11 played along the side of a hill and were pretty tough. The baskets for 12 & 16 were a little too close together for tourney play. Hole 15 & 18 were simple throw over the gulley shots, though 18 was a little too long. Hole 17 was a tough left turning hole with woods and downhill to the left the whole way. If the road to the right is OB, this would be crazy-tough for lefty. Both courses seem to be pretty righty favored. If any hole did favor lefty, righty had decent options.

The 9 holer didn't have a distinctly different flavor, perhaps a little longer on average and it's on a hill that's higher and even more steep. North wind was crazy today and I'm sure the course usually plays much differently with the South wind. Again, with the surrounding road OB, this one is going to play noticeable tougher. The elevation changes were a ton of fun. Some holes were too open, but the wind made it plenty interesting. Signs were good: accurate distances and easy to see from a distance, though I was often trying for a double eagle on 340' marked par "5's". Great park and worth playing!

Baldwin Disc

Post by DiscWiz »

We are in the early phases of planning a Tourney for this spring at Running Horse. It will have to be limited to about 30 people as the course crosses at a couple points and I do not want people to get hurt. Hal also has a nine hole course in Baldwin and we may do 18 at Running Horse and 9 at Hals.

While Running Horse is private, it’s private like my first girl friend….not that private. I’m always open to a round so if you are in town let me know and we can play the Horse and then head over to Hals and play his new 9 holer.

Black Hoof

Black Hoof is a Lenexa course in the planning. It is supposed to be in the ground in early spring.

Would you be available to show me Running Horse tomorrow? The pictures look like fun, plus I am interested in how you prepared the area for the rubber tee pads. I want to put down some of those horse stall mats at out local course.

Big thanks to Dave for showing me the Running Horse! Such a fun course with no bad holes. Good used of the elevation changes too.

I buzzed over to Shawnee Mission, got lost in the gigantic park, found the course, and then played about 9 holes, and looked at two more before the sunset. It shouldn't be that hard to navigate, but I didn't find 4 or 8's teepad. There is a printable map of the course on the PDGA site, I would print this off next time I go back.

Mike's right, tees are a must (especially before Worlds). Out the holes I saw, 3 was the most original. It screamed for a Meteor. On the way out I came across hole 18's teepad. I thought, This hole is awesome! Looked 800 ft. downhill across the road and through a gap in the trees. After I tried to crush a drive over the Road, I walked 50ft down the fairway and saw the Basket over to the left for a standard 300ft hyzer, I had looked at 1's basket instead.

The approach on Hole 7 was tricky, that low hyzer skip shot. Even more difficult when a man and his dog walk out of the Jungle on the left and he lets the dog sniff the basket for three minutes before he gets out of the way.

Fun course though, I would like to play the rest.

"Meet me at Water Works at noon......" I was there! Where were you? Damn full message box on your voice mail.

Got my ass kicked by a one legged man. Seriously! Terry from KC throws 400' and makes most of his 30' putts. We had a pretty fun round.

Was that the same one-legged man from KC that was at the Frizzz, or are there more than one, one-legged-disc-golfers-from-kc?

Nope, this was a different dude. Guy was probably about 45 or so and in remarkable physical condition. Obviously extreemly excellent form. If you didn't know, you wouldn't be able to tell.
