Educational Disc Golf Experience

I had a conversation with Jay “Yeti” Reading today. Jay would love to get the KDGA involved with the E.D.G.E.

I think it is a great idea. The KDGA has made some HUGE steps the last couple years. I think that picking up the E.D.G.E. as a charitable program would be another move in the right direction.

Just wanted to get this on the table. Give everyone a chance to get their opinions out. If you have any ideas let me know by PM, or post them here.

I don't know if they have made a video or not?

I know that they have written a curriculum for schools to use to teach kids the basics of disc golf. The skill shot challenge is a huge part of the curriculum. The kids can earn different badges based on their performance.

the Emporia middle school is an EGDE course; the interest in disc golf from younger students can probably be attributed to the early exposure to the sport.

Sounds like a great idea to me. I'd like to know more details though, about how Yeti wants the kdga to get involved.

2/3 of the donations will go towards Kansas schools, eh? That would be awesome. Sounds like a great program to get behind and help turn disc golf into something huge. I'm all for it.

I know our local school has Disc Golf week in PE class. Middle or High School students play in PE class, at May Dennis park. I think it's pretty casual. I've never inquired into exactly how much they play, how often, who's teaching, etc., but the I think the schools might be pretty receptive to the idea in general.

I think pushing EDGE would be a great direction to head with the KDGA.

Mike-

I don't know if Kansas would get 2/3 of any $$$. It would probably be up to school districts to write grants. ??? Jay can answer this question better then me.

Ryan-

I am sure it is pretty casual. The EDGE program would give the teachers more direction. Most of the teachers are probably in the dark about disc golf. The EDGE curriculum would give them some direction.

Sounds like it'd be our duty to help find schools for the EDGE folks to talk with, and our duty to ensure that we find ones that are interested and will utilize the funds ... is that a fair assessment?

I am sure that most schools would love to have someone help out with the disc golf unit.

Check out the Kansas EDGE schools.

Dodge City- I think that wife may of had something to do with that. She did an after school program when we lived there.

Wichita- I know Iqbal was doing something with it a while back.

I have been talking on and off with peteacher (kdga member) in response to a request for discs for students.I bet the EDGE program would have been a big help. The way I understand it 2/3 of all the money YOUraise goes to the school or schools of choice.Ideally the money raised locally is spent locally to further promote disc. The only question is ,if the money is not raised locally can it still be used there.(for example money raised in a general KDGA -statewide fund gets earmarked how?)PS Yeti I`m still waiting to hear from somone about GIRLSCOUTS ,Ron

He is a home school teacher. I don't know if the EDGE is willing to help home schools. Jay will know the answer.

Wichita has already been involved with the E.D.G.E. program. During the late summer of 2005, Jon Lysket came to town to give a presentation to all of the USD 259 PE teachers. Bill Paulson, Miranda, Iqbal and myself helped with this presentation. If I remember right, USD 259 purchased three portable Innova baskets and 100 discs to go with each basket. Iqbal gave one follow-up demonstration. We haven't heard much since.

They have 3 baskets in my kids' school gym. My boy was freaking out at his first day of school, and saw the gym had baskets.

Did we ever come to a decision on supporting the program?
