Chronology of Kansas courses
Man what an awsome thread!! I really enjoyed reading the events that led to the KDGA and discgolf in Kansas...I really enjoyed learning the sport in Wichita and traveling around playing almost every course in Kansas. I also have played many courses in Co,OK,AK,MO,CA..They have many great courses, but to me there is nothing like playing where you learned this wonderful sport....
Long live the KDGA
Long live the KDGA

Updates
I'd like to be able to update the PDGA Directory at the end of this year using some of the info provided on this thread. Here's what's new.
1977
LINDSBORG, Lindsborg Football Field. I have always believed that Lindsborg was the original basket course in the state installed in 1977. Baskets are in safe keeping. Contact me if need more info. (Bill Paulson)
1978
HAYS, Fort Hays Campus. Before the Frontier Park "Flying Bison" Disc golf course came into existence, local disc golfers created an object course on Fort Hays State University's Campus in the late '70s. Players included Ron Rice, Karen Elder, Les Dreiling, and Deb Ewy; most were students at the university. Fort Hays' security officers opposed the activity because they felt the student disc golfers were damaging the grass. (Ron Rice)
1979
TOPEKA, Crestview Park. Originally a nine hole course designed by high school students. It was later redesigned for 18. Crestview Park led by Scott (not sure of his last name right now, he died of a heart defect several years ago), and Chris Breit, with assistance from Carlos Mejia, Chuck Torrence, and others. It was later redesigned by Bruce Hudson and DDDC, with 15 permanent holes and later 18 permanent holes. Alternate layout now includes the killer Crestview Gold. (Terry Clark)
1980
EMPORIA, Emporia State Campus. The 1st course in Emporia was an object course on ESU campus designed by Ray Wright & Roger Brickell in 1980.(Roger Brickell)
1983
WAKEENEY, Boy Scout Park. Designed by Paul Wildeman. Installed in the spring or summer months. (Paul Wileman)
HAYS, Frontier Park. Designed by Ron Rice and Company installed September of 1983. To the best of my knowledge, it is the last remaining original course. The Frontier course originally consisted of 19 asphalt tee boxes (one alternate on hole 7) and 18, 5 foot poles that were 2 1/2 inches wide. The estimated cost for asphalt was $15 with an added labor cost between $40 to $50 per tee box. The poles were recycled from old street signs. Additional expenses included limestone tee signs which were $20 apiece and were installed in 1989. The total cost for installing the course was estimated to be $5,850.
In 1992, the city bought and installed 18 Mach III pole baskets, one of the official baskets for disc golf, replacing the poles on the Frontier Park. During the summer of 2003, the Park’s Department added 17 concrete alternate tees. In 2004, they added alternate pins, allowing four separate looks on each hole. Contributors for the re-design include Ron Rice, Dusty Ream, Kelly Williams, and Brett Straight.
1985
KANSAS CITY, Rosedale Park. Rosedale went in the ground May 15, 1985 after a year or so of planning. Ace mason, who was only a med student in his own mind at the time, was the driving force behind both picking the park and designing the course.
As posted earlier many of the longer settings that are there today were there 20 years ago. (most notable is number 17 at the top of the hill. recent discussions by those who know came up with only 2 deuces on the long (original) placement, both were considered field aces.) The first wide open held at Rosedale was the Third Annual KC Wide Open, the first two were temporary setups in Shawnee Mission park in 83 and Waterworks in 84. (Maurice Richard Geauzinier)
1988
ROSE HILL, (Location?)- Private course that at one time was the longest in the state but is now an easier 10 hole layout. Started in 1988. Baskets added in 1999. Designed by Jeff Priest. I have more info but am out of time and would have to dig in some old files. Go to the Friz next week because most of the people you need to talk to for info will be there.(Bill Paulson).
WINFIELD, Cherry Street Park. I'm guessing Harvey had something to do with this one, but not for sure. Ask Harv what time of year it was intstalled.
TOPEKA, Lake Shawnee - Bruce Hudson and DDDC. Originally post targets, then tire baskets, finally real baskets! The first course at Lake Shawnee was a temporary course installed by Ace Mason sometime in the 1980's. There was a tournament but the course wasn't made permanent at that time. There are currently 4 - 5 course layouts at Lake Shawnee but only the original course is permanent.
VALLEY CENTER, Flying Bee Country Club. The Valley Center course started in 1987 but wasn't playable until early 1988. It started as a 9 Hole course but with only three baskets. Expanded to 18 holes (five baskets) in 1995.
SALINA, Lakewood Park South. Salina's original 9 holes were designed and installed by Larry Pankratz in 1988. The alt south pads went in 91 or 92. The north side went in 94 or 95. The south side was set up with the alts as an original design. Then hole one got reconfigured with a new pad and hole 8 got two extra pads when the north side went in.
The alt pads on the south side were not original. Those were put in a year or so before the north side. Contributors: Clint Donaldson, Kevin Carter, Mark Salada, Mark?(Noodles), Red (I don't even know his real name) Ben Winholz, Ron Tangeman, Ted K, and DGSH.
CITY?, Central Riverside was put in '88
1989 –
BELOIT, Chataqua Park
(Myers remembers playing Beloit in 89, says established 95 in CD)
WICHITA, Herman Hill. The 18 hole layout was designed by Mark Jennings. It was only 9 holes until the local club raised the funds to complete the layout. There were many minor alterations that took place over the years as need arose, (police station added, etc). A new water treatment plant was completed in 2003 and the park was redesigned by Buddy Kassner and Bill Paulson. The last 9 alternate pin placements are ordered and are due in the ground the fall of 2004. This will make the course with two tees and two pin placements for 18 holes.
Oak-The 9 hole course was designed by Mark Jennings but was changed over the years from a pitch and putt to a more challenging course. In 2001 an 18 hole layout was proposed to the city with various changes to this plan until the final proposal was accepted in late summer 2004. The original baskets from Central Riverside that were moved to Herman will be reunited with those in Oak Park for a complete 18 hole (two tee/one pin) course stretching into North Riverside Park for the completion. The expansion and redesign of Oak was accomplished by Buddy Kassner and Bill Paulson.
MANHATTAN, KSU Campus. Do they still play this course? Again, a designer and time installed.
1990
HAYS, Rolling Hills. Originally a 9 hole tone pole course.. The Rolling Hills course received the upgrade to Mach III’s in 1994.
WINFIELD, Southwestern College. Need a course designer and time installed. I do know this about Winfield. The old college course is no longer in the ground. Harvey planted the baskets for the new course about 2 years ago. The course is still changeing. It will have 2 tees and 2 baskets/hole in the near future.
WINFIELD- There was a pole course at the one college that shut down besides the one at Southwestern. Harvey Barger can tell the details. About 2001 the couse at Southwestern was moved to vacant land on the east edge of the campus. 9 hole course.
1991 (Herington was in DGWN in 91, but no date cited in CD)
EMPORIA, Jones Youth. Need a designer and time of year installed.
LAWRENCE, Centennial Park. Need a designer and time of year installed. (See 1988) Centennial Park was done by a small group of guys.
Chris Breit was one of them and is still around. Lawrence - Dennis Vahsholtz and Bruce Hudson were both involved, and others.
KANSAS CITY, Prairie Center, In 1990 the Prairie Center Disc Golf course was planted. Ned Smethers was the designer and main driving force. He had help from various KCFDC members. Some people that helped were Ace Mason, Mike Mannering, and Mikey Edsted. Tom Butler came along in late 1991 and in 1992. Tom hand built and installed 18 matching double chain assemblies, and formed and poured 9 new tee pads. The baskets were later sold off and the funds used to help purchase our current baskets. The City of Olathe between 1990 and 1993 planted approximately 200 trees on the course, many of them per Ned and Tom's direction. Sometime after 1994, Ed Gonzales and the KCFDC redesigned the course and moved many of the tee pads and pin locations around. In 2005 Bob Hayett, Tom Butler, Bryan Guthrie, Andy Lewis, Dean Uhlman, Brad Meyrs, Rick Rothstein, Dan Forster, and the KCFDC redesigned holes 12 thru 16 and added a new long pad on hole 2. In the Spring of 2005, Crazy John Brooks, who hadn't played Prairie Center in a long while, came to one of our Monday night leagues, and said "I haven't been here in a long time, but, the trees have grown so well and the park is beautiful, in fact, it is heaven".
I've thought that for 15 years now.
I hope this brief history helps.

1992
SALINA, Lakewood Park North. Second 9 on the north side was probably 92. Designed and installed by us. Contributors: Clint Donaldson, Kevin Carter, Mark Salada, Mark?(Noodles), Red (I don't even know his real name) Ben Winholz, Ron Tangeman, Ted K, and DGSH
MCPHERSON, Lakeside. Clint's probably the one most responsible for the design. It's basically backwards from how we originally threw it. Larry Pankratz may of had something to do with the original design or the Manhattan object course. I'll ask him this weekend. No I think Clint was there? I remember Ron Tangeman and Red being there cause Red about killed Ron.
1993
STOCKTON, Stockton City Park. Need a designer and time installed.
1995
COLBY, Villa High Park. Colby was installed in the spring of 1995. Originally designed by Gary Schuette. Later (1998-99?) re-designed by myself. (still 2-3 original holes)
1996
NORTON, Elmwood Park. Norton was installed after Colby. (96-97) I beleive the 1st Oz tournament in Norton was held in 1998. DM4, is there a date on the monument on hole #1?
1997
WICHITA, Cesna Park. Tone Pole Course: I forgot about that one. It was located in Cessna Park (Woodlawn & Mt. Vernon). I live near there and have only played it once in about 1997 or 1998. It was almost impossible to follow then. I don't believe its still there. Again, Buddy or Bill would have more info here. still play out at Cessna occasionally. Only 3 tonepoles left, but you can mix it up with different tees. The park would actually make a really good temporary tournament layout. Has it all... hills, big trees, forested perimeter and creek, through the woods shots.... good place for a permanent course? I think there is only room for 9 holes, though. when i first started playing, air capitol had a few tounaments at cessna, we did manage to fit 18 temp holes out there, it's a cool little course. i doubt cessna is used alot. would be great to see 18 machs out there.
1998
PARSONS, The course in Parsons has been there a long time. I believe it was put in as a memorila to a deceased love one.
1999
KANSAS CITY, Rosedale Down Under. As far as Rosedale in KC; its my understanding that Ace Mason was responsible for the design and installation of that course. Again, hopefully someone will confirm or refute.
FORT SCOTT, Gunn Park.. Ft. Scott has been in a while. Buckles friend, Danny had a lot to do with that one.
MANHATTAN, Cico Park. Need a designer and time installed.
MANHATTAN, Tuttle Creek. Need a designer ant time intstalled.
PRATT, May Dennis Park. Need a designer and time installed.
RANSOM, Grissel Park. Ransom went in the ground in the spring of 2000. Smokey Fairbanks was the driving force behind it. It started as a 9 hole course full of
FLICKSTERS, then evolved into the current 12 hole layout.
WAMEGO, Pennyland Park. Need designer and time installed
2000
HUTCHINSON, Carey Park. Also the Hutch course has had it's own history moving back and forth but if you are talking about the new 9 there were a bunch of us....me included...involved in designing the new nine and the changes to the old nine.... The best person to contact here would be either Randy Mattingly or Jack Mace or Dale Bare or Brian Shields....all may have some input... I dont know the dates but Hutch started with 9 holes in the same area as the course is now. Very short pitch and putt. The baskets were donated by the optimist club. It was the then moved to Buffalo hill in the same park it was a very nice area complete with enough lights for great night golf. The city then decided to put a new swimming pool on buffalo hill so out of guilt they moved the nine back to the original area but with a new layout. Those nine are part of the current layout. The city then bought another 9 pins and the club more or less designed the current 18. Maybe Dyck or Randy M. might know the years these events took place. The original 9 was in the ground at least as far back as 1990.probably earlier.
NEWTON, Camp Hawk. NEWTON- Started in 1999 but completed in 2000. Designed by Buddy Kassner/ Bill Paulson and Gavin Pederson. In 2002, expanded to 24 holes by Gavin Pederson et al.
2001
COLWICH, Cowskin DG Park. Started in 2000 but first playable fall 2001. Designed by Bill Paulson / Paul Kear. 9 baskets and 9 objects. Final 9 baskets in 2004. Full time course as of Nov 2004. Prior to this was only open Nov 1 to March 31.
GREAT BEND, Windy Hill. Heard rumors Harv contributed to this one. Need to confirm designer and date of birth.
KC WYANDOTTE, County Park. WyCo design credit should probably just go to the KCFDC. But the primary designers were, Mike L. Wesley, Jack Carmack, and Kevin Montgomery. Lots of input from others was used though including the thoughts and ramblings of one Dr. Ace Mason. Many individual holes have individual credits.
I don't recall the exact date the baskets were planted but 2001 is correct
2002
ARKANSAS CITY, Camp Quaker Haven. Two miles southeast of Arkansas City. It was installed by Jon Cunningham and Bobby Debusk in 2002 with 9 baskets, and in 2003 we added 9 more baskets to make it an 18 holes course. I don't believe it is on the PDGA directory, but it's a great course, and one that not many people know about. Just thought I would let you know, so you can add it to the list.
ELLIS, Sky View Park. Pretty sure Kevin and Skyler Rorabaugh designed it, and I can get a hold of him I think. The new 9 holes were installed in July of 2004.
OLATHE, California Trail. Olathe CA Trail--call the school and ask for Dave Youker. He designed it with someone he doesn't remember the name of (a vague description mentioned a somewhat quirky personality....duh!) 913-780-7220
TOPEKA, Rice Park. Bruce Hudson with East Topeka NIA and Topeka Parks & Rec.
Seems like Bruce might be the guy to ask - he also knows most of the KC history as he's been involved with the KCFDC since who knows when.
WICHITA, Riverlawn Christian Church. Riverlawn Christian Church in Wichita was designed by Todd McCutcheon. DOB was about 2 years ago.
DERBY, 18 holes laid out and designed by Bill Paulson / Marcus Anderson. Only 9 baskets installed. The remainder are planned for spring 2005.
2003
PITTSBURG- 2003 9 hole course chip and putt in Lincoln Park. I forget his name, radio personality down there but Dennis V. knows.
Also, I realize Dodge City, Emporia's East side, Hoisington, and the new Great Bend course aren't listed. Are there any other courses I missed? Now, if anyone knows of dates that are incorrect, please post it. Talk to golfers in your community and try to figure out who helped design courses and what time of the year they were installed. I figure it will be easier to do it by seasons if months aren't remembered.
If you know anything about any of these courses please post it.
I need your help yall.

Wichita Love Box Course 9 holes designed by Roger Brickell early 2005..
The 4th course in Wichita
Good mix of long and short holes. Tight and open holes. O.B. comes ito effect on 6 of the 9 holes. Not the best course but worth playing for a change every once and a whi

_dm4 wrote:I finally had a chance to go to the course and check. The date on tee #1 in Norton is 1998, but I started playing in 95 or 96 and the course was already there. Not sure how long it had been there before the date that it was officially dedicated (yes they even had a ribbon cutting!), but I will try and find out.
_dm4 wrote:I talked to Ben Bolt about the Norton course, and he told me he was not sure of the date, but he remembers the Hays tone poles were brought to Norton for a short time before the baskets were in. He can't remember if it was all 18 or just nine, while the baskets were being finished at New Age. He thinks Ron would remember if asked specifically about the Norton date. He also said that there was an object course on the Hays campus before the pole course went in at Frontier. Campus officials gave them a hard time about treading on the grass! He said that they had to get new discs when they started playing at Frontier, and found out they did not float! Ben says the tone poles are much more fair than the baskets. You know when you hit one! Baskets spit, but he did admit, they are easier to hit.
The boy scouts put up a 9 holer in my hometown of Horton, KS. I don't really know of any info past that. I think I first noticed it by the lake in 03. It's baskets seem to be homemade but they are fairly decent. Holton also put in a course in the last few years. I played it about a year ago and it's not too bad for another little nine holer.

If we were to update the Kansas course directory pages, this is what I think would be cool.

I think directions should be precise and contact info should be current. If there is added tees and pins they should be noted as well. Any food for thought?
