new course

Post by ks_cosmo »

We are planning on putting a new disc course around the football field in Frankfort. Is there anywhere a person can put he layout of the ground and get ideas for the course? Or. is there someone that could look at it and give us ideas? We have the baskets bought already. Thanks for any input.

The better your terrain is for disc golf (trees, elevation, water, etc), the greater the need to hire a professional designer. Post something here and see what kind of replies you get. There is also a website for the course design group that shows members throughout the country and where the live. Should be some contact info.

If your course is around a football field, there are probably few if any obstacles. You may be able to use fences, bleachers, etc. in the design. The design group that Mike suggested will be of little to no use to you is my guess.

I think trying to find an individual to help is the way to go. Problem is we have few to no members in you area. Topeka would be about as close as we get. You may want to try nebdisc.com, as close as you are to Fairbury and Beatrice you may be able to get some help.

Post back or PM me if you run into a dead end.

you can kind of see the layout of the football field on google maps. 8th street on the north . 6th street on the south and oak street on the east. land runs over the hill to railroad tracks to the west. Parking lot to the left of field. side hill runs all along the westside of field and along the south also. smaller side hill on eastside of of field . practice field runs along the east side of property. there are some pine trees on the north side along fence line.

Here is a photo to help with discussions. This is the correct location, right?

I live in Manhattan (less than an hour away) and know all of the avid Manhattan area disc golfers because we've spent the last 1.5 years getting two new courses approved, designed & built right here in the Little Apple. (b.t.w. We're going to be installing Baskets in Warner Park in May)

I am somewhat familiar with your sports complex. My sister-in-law taught in the Twin Valley League for approx. 10 years, so I've watched a couple HS football games in Frankfort over the years... however it was pretty much dark when I attended the FB games and it was 10+ years ago.

Laying out disc golf courses are a lot of fun and we've learned a lot of lessons in the last year with our projects. With that in mind, I'm sure I could get some guys to make a road trip or two this summer to your site to help with some general layout ideas.

Specifically speaking about your site, one rule of thumb that I've found to be pretty helpful is you need approx. 1 acre per fairway to come up with a "good" layout. Much less than that makes it start to feel pretty crowded and too short.

Here are my initial questions.
1. How many baskets do you have? (9, 18, other #?)... What is your basket to acre ratio?
2. Do you have to stay close to the existing structures (bleachers, fences, etc)? It would be ideal to be able to play during the other existing activities are going on. Example, DG course being is closed during football practices, track meets, etc. would be bad.
3. What about the property between the football field & the baseball field (6th Street to 4th Street)? Can you even play along the edge of it to make a loop?
4. How rough/wet is the green strip extending from 8th Street going west, then south to the railroad tracks, then back around counter clockwise to 6th Street? This could be a nice loop. I can't tell if that's a high point ridge, or a low drainage ditch.
5. When are you planning on getting started?

I sent you a Personal Message through this site containing my contact information if you're interested. If not, I understand.

Good luck with your course development.

Sincerely, Rick
