I think good par 4's and 5's have to be tricky. If they are just long, a pro player can "birdie" them every time.
Better par 4's and 5's have defined fairways that may have doglegs. OB can do a lot to make a hole more difficult. Tricky areas around or before the green also increase the difficulty without adding distance.

Well I'd never seen it listed as otherwise. I can "live" with a 5 on that hole anything lower and I'm pumped!!!!!!!!
There are only 2 holes on those courses that I don't expect to get a 3 or better on. 17W and 6E before they opened up the area by the creek. I dogged an easy putt for 3 last time on 6.
Oh ok 3 holes, 11E in the long. Getting a 3 on that hole is work.

Wait till you see Hole 7 in Manhattan. Its like 787ft. It is three-able, if you can flat out bomb. I don't know how many times I have played that course, and 4 is the best I can come up with on that hole.Bangrrr wrote:Well I'd never seen it listed as otherwise. I know alot of shot like this are fun. But not all are. What Mike was saying is so true I real good Par 4 or 5 hole should be hard because you have to lay up to make a corner or dogleg . to short or to far and you are in trouble. But par four because of legnth isnt a real par four. that make it where only those who can throw real far a chance to birdie the hole . those that cant can never have a shot at it.Wait till you see Hole 7 in Manhattan. The course that smitty and select wvdga crew set up for the canyon was FN awesome.
I hope some of those holes can get incorperated into the "real" canyon course.
I had a blast playing there today and cant wait till the next canyon event cuz that place Is like Heaven on earth.
I really like the fact that the trails around there are not man made but trampled out by the cows.
The WVDGA crew Kicks A$$ at building courses

The course was pretty good.
Hole 1 was perfect, no changes needed.
Hole 2 one of those little trees needs to come out.
Hole 3 played pretty well. The green was brutal!
Hole 4 has 1 branch that I need to take out, and it will play much better.
Hole 5 Classic hole! (Cliff hole)
Hole 6 was a little tougher over the edge. (Skull hole)
Hole 7 was to Ez needs to be longer or shorter. I didn't like that all the discs collected at the bottom for a super easy 3.
The tone pole could be done without in my book
Hole 9 was a sweet little ace run
Hole 10 needs a few little trees cleaned out, then the straight shot will be sweet. (basket on the hill)
Hole 12 The "V tree" hole was sweet!
Hole 13 I wanted a sharper anhyzer then what we had.
Hole 14 Was a nice hole. Pretty ez for a right hander.
I have a few ideas to make it play a little harder.

The Down Under's not even the best course in Rosedale Park. It is fun sometimes, but the top course at Rosedale is great, even if it is a bit left-handed.discscout wrote:Best course has to be Rosedale down under. Everyone has the arm to park every hole but it takes every shot in your bag to score well. It just needs better signage.
Missouri, where the state rock is lead, the state animal is sterile, and we elected a dead guy to the U.S. Senate, because he was the best candidate.

Favorite Holes in Kansas
Here is a favorite course thread turned favorite hole thread.
*Herman Hill: Gotta love 13's short tee!
*Colwich: #16 right tee, 17 long tee, & 18 long tee.
*Newton: #2 long pin, 7 long pin, 22 & 23.
*Atchison: #8 on the 18 hole course.
*Beloit: #1 , 7, 18 left
*Ellis: #6, 3 & 7 (not really, but points for psychosis), 12 left on trail by pond.
*Down Under: any of the downhillers.
*Ice Bowl course at Oak. #16 (right turn down path),17 (crazy woods), & 18 (long down toward the scout house).
*Rich Ranch Canyon: up the cliff hole
*Grove: Dual fairway hole playing downhill towards the river, 2nd one coming back, I think. Hole playing parallel to the river into the trees is good too. Holes 8 & 11? 15, like 11, is an awesome hole, just feels too open off the tee.
*Daniel's: #1! , new 3, the crazy hay-bale hole, the other hanging basket hole, #18 when it was 2 perfect bombs to get to the cliff over the river, then 450' more to the bucket. The only hole crazier than this was the 1500' classic from the 2000 Friz that played over the river and through the woods. There were some other great holes on the old "west" course.
Sounds like Running Horse (private course near Baldwin City) & Ozanam (private course in KC not too far from Ted's) might have some contenders for this list.
Other reputable courses I haven't played yet:
-Thomas Park.
-Peterpan since the redesign.
-Ransom tournament layout.
-Crestview Gold.
-North Shawnee temp course.
-Fort Riley.
-Pomona.
There might be a few more than 10 favorite holes in Kansas. Since I haven't played them all, I can't really judge, but counting temp & extinct courses, I would go with those in bold for my top 10. Top 3 favorites would be #1 at Daniel's, #14 at Ted's, & (#8 concret-alt) at Hays. Only #8 at Hays isn't in the temp/ extinct category.
Some I would add to my list:Schoen-hopper wrote:So, best holes in KS, eh? What makes them the best? I'd say fun factor and the balance of good scoring variation with fairness.
At Hays, my favorites are Hole 1 asphalt to alt, Hole 3 concrete to original, Hole 6 asphalt to original, Hole 8! concrete to alt, Hole 15 concrete to alt., Hole 18 concrete to alt. Which one is the best hole? 8 is both tough and fair. Great par 4. A big drive is a bonus there, but I've been punished many times for getting greedy with a roller. I like temp hole E with mando under bridge!
The Rock has an assortment of great holes as well. Hole 1 from the shorter tee to the middle placement up top. Hole 2 to the top of the rock. Hole 3. Hole 4 down to the corner. Hole 6. Hole 8. Hole 12! Hole 14 if the island and the area where the drop zone is was the only thing that was safe. What is the best hole? They all had great scoring spread as the stats showed. Hole 12 bad the best scoring spread. From 2 to 6 and more. All the downhill bombs are fun.
My favorite hole at Oak Park is hole 10 long. Toughest hole on the course. Maybe not for pro, but par 4 for advanced. 17 is a good one too.
At Herman Hill, I like hole 4 long to long, hole 12 short to long, hole 11 long to long, and hole 17 long to long.
In Jones Park, for the west course, I like hole 4 and hole 11 the best.
For Jones East, I like hole 2 to long or short, hole 4 to long or short, hole 6 to long, hole 8, and hole 17 to long.
I agree that that hole 8 is the best at Tuttle Creek.
Centennial has few really good holes. My favorite is the longest downhiller that plays across the creek. #3 with the old numbering?
At Rosedale, I might like 11 long the best? 10 island green is classic. 14 is a cool righty hyzer. Hole 1 and a few others have some difficult long woods placements.
At Wyco my favorites are 1 long pin,2,3,4,7, and 14. Those are all killer holes.
*At Ted's, 1,3,6 on long or medium tee, 9 on both tees and both pins, 11 from long to long is one of the best tunnel shots, 13, 14 both placements!, 15, 18 from the long tee to the long or short basket.
