Rookie Problem

Post by jstites »

I have only been playing a couple of months and I am happy with how may game is progressing...except for my approach. My drives and long approach/fairway shots are accurate, both line and distance. But my approach shots, from 75' to 150'ish, are really erratic. I cannot figure out what adjustments I need to make.

One thing I have noticed when throwing my approach shots is my release causes my disc to flutter. I throw sidearm on drives and long fairway shots, but switch to BH when closer to the pin and use the 4-finger "power" grip. When I release and my fingers extend under the disc, they tend to hit the right side of the disc and seems to always flutter. My fingers are pretty long and I cannot figure out how to let go without striking the disc.

Any advice at all would be appreciated

Maybe check your follow through - A strong follow through should subsequently strengthen your grip enough to reduce your flutter.

Just because you have a strong follow through does not mean you will overthrow your shot, if that is what you are afraid of.

Also you may also try throwing your approach as a hyzer shot instead of straight at it - hyzer's tend to leave a lot of room for error.

---- correct me if I'm wrong - I'm not the pro here.
I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times.

On a lighter note, for KU Baskteball Fans, Moulaye Niang (the 7'1" stick thin forward from Senegal) has been spotted from time to time at the skate park by hole 13 at Centennial. One day, he was leaving as my group was teeing off. I put a drive about 20' past the pin across the creek. This caused Moulaye to ask if there is something we were throwning at or just to see you could throw the furtherst. We pointed out the baskets to him and he immediatley lost interest. If I could do it all over again, I would have told him it was all about distance because I am pretty sure he would have wanted to give it a go. I am going to miss that kid.

I will give that a try. I think I might just go Happy Gilmore. "Oh, man. That was so much easier than putting. I should just try to get the disc in one shot every time."

For approach shots of that distance, you need to practice playing catch with someone. For 90% of these kind of shots, you should be using some type of putter. Loose grip with plenty of spin, just like a frisbee. You want to play it a little high and let the shot drop straight down with just a little hyzer at the end. With practice, you can run at the basket and still leave yourself less than a 20' putt.

clean release and good finger spring is the key, just like putting the last finger off the disc is all you have to worry about, and if they all come off at the same time even better. 8)

That was the hardest part of the game to figure out for me too. Now, for anything under 250 feet I use nothing but a putter, unless i have to get fancy with the shot. Also, I change my grip from the power grip I use for drives, to the pancake grip. This has helped me a ton with accuracy, and I'm now able to run shots from 200 feet out and not worry about a long putt.

What is the pancake grip? I am not a huge fan of the 4-finger grip, but I have not found anything that is both comforatable and stable in my hand.

I don't think I've ever heard it called the "pancake grip". I've always called it a fan grip because your fingers are spread under the disc like a fan. Unless the pancake grip is something different. Do tell....

The fan grip is what I use for putting most of the time because it gives better control for a short throw. I don't think I've ever used a power grip for anything other than a drive.

I've always called it the pancake grip, but i'm sure it's the same thing as the fan grip. Maybe i'm the only person that calls it that. :? I also wanted to agree that playing catch with a putter is a great way to help this part of your game out. you don't need to stand 200 feet away from each other, try about 90 feet, and you will see vast improvements in your game quickly.

I've never been able to use a 4 finger grip...it's not just comfortable to me..I always use 3 and just let my pinky hang out of the way..

This is very useful Info., Use the putter my friend, it is the straightest flyer.

I don't usually share my secrets because I'm so damm good  But, I kinda treat it like ball golf. thru my swing I will not take my eyes off the ball until my swing is almost stopped, meaning I keep my head down thru the swing. Disc; don't take your eye's off the basket. Even when your body's moving everywhere, keep your eye's on the target thru your throw. If you have read my book's, and listened to my tape's, it's on page 5( a good place to eat lunch in a different town? No, Page 7- After the tourney- the closest strip clu..... O.K as I was saying............ What the hell was I saying?????

One suggestion from a newbie....try a MODIFIED POWER GRIP. I never told you this, but look on that web site for that company that rhymes with Noneofya. They have several variations on grips there that might be helpful. Hope it helps........If not, just grap a Banger GT and Rip it about 5' right of the pin.
Throw some D's on it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
