May 9th - Charity Doubles Event at 'Thornfield'

Post by davide »

The Second Annual FLHW Prostate Cancer Doubles Shoot Out will be held May 9th. This years event will be held at Thornfield Disc Golf Course. Thornfield is a beautiful, challenging (7700 ft) private course located in Stillwell, KS (167th and Metcalf). The course is also now part of the 2009 Worlds for the Open Divisions. If you are playing in the Worlds, don't miss your chance to get a two-round preview of this course!

A flyer is available and registration is open on-line at http://www.flhw.org/2009discgolf.htm
A course map is at: http://docs.google.com/Presentation?id= ... d_88cfmgkw
A Scorecard is at: http://docs.google.com/Doc?id=dctsrvjd_124cknz9rhp

The cost is the same as last year: $35 per player, $70 per team.
Also, same as last year, we broke the teams down into three flights versus an Open/Am/Intermediate format.

Though this is a charity event there will be great prizes, CTP, ACE Fund etc. and the players pack includes:
- Disc
- Mini
- Lunch
- etc.

In 2008 we were able to raise $2,000 for advanced prostate cancer research, with only 27 teams. We are looking forward to a larger crowd in 2009!!

I'll do what I can to check back here and answer any questions however if you email me at 'bradley996 at gmail.com' I'll get back to you right away.
If you want further information on the charity it is available at: http://www.flhw.org

Bill Paulson helped design this course. Heard its a monster from the long tees. This doubles charity tourney and another 4-man scrable charity event a month later will be the only chances to play this private course before worlds. Or so I hear.

Edit: looks like the other KC Worlds thread pretty much covered this. Wooded course, I'd love to get the chance to play it.

I promise I'll stop pushing the event after this post (maybe?!)

It is long: Par 60 and 7700 feet from the pro tees.
I have played it twice, once in the inaugural event last September and once a few weeks back in preparation for my event.

A little insight. Hole 1 and 2 are rather boring or routine, 300 feet or less, easy pars, lots of birdies.
However they just tease you before the course kicks your butt!
#3 is 480+ and one of the tougher par 3's in KC
Go check the map and the distance on the scorecard - #'s 8 and 9 are back to back beasts!
It a great mix of up/down hills, anys, hyzers, long holes, short holes (though not many!!)

My event on May 9th is a fundraiser but still includes:
two rounds
disc
mini
lunch
beer (not an unlimited supply, but enough to wash your lunch down!)
and a guaranteed good time on a great private course!

The money raised will be used to fund research to find treatments and a cure for advanced prostate cancer.
At 46 I have been battling advanced PC for four years and more needs to be done.
> 1 in 6 men will get PC before they die
> every 19 minutes a men dies from PC, 20,000 a year

So come on out and join us, sign up is available on-line now!!!

This gets us to 18 teams, or 1/3 full.

Still a ways to go, but we have had 6 teams added in the last three days!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Course set up.
The TD and I walked the course again the other day and the tentative plan is this:
ROUND 1 (the Worlds) all teams will play from the red tees (long tees) with the exception of hole 14. The default setup will cause issues with speed of play so we are going to shorten the hole a bit.
Total length of the course setup for Round 1 will be 200 ft less than default (7500ft aprox) and par will be 59 versus 60.
ROUND 2 (the Shootout) this is a long course and our best guess is round 1 will take three hours. After lunch etc. we will try to get back on the course for round two between 2 and 2:30. In order to speed things up a little and make round two more fun (more birdie and ace runs)
We are going to play most of the Par 4's from the blue tees (short tees) and as Par 3's.
Total length of the course setup for Round 2 will still be 6500ft aprox and par will be 56.
Might be more information than required but we are just trying to be as forthcoming as possible!!
One last update, well maybe one more tomorrow.....
We are up to 38 teams, only 16 openings remain
If you plan on playing and have not mailed in a registration or paid via PayPal
your risking missing out.
