If anybody made it home with a scorecard in your pocket, I'd love to get that back at some point.

I'm also hoping to hear some feedback about formats/length of matches/holes played etc. For instance, did anyone in the finals feel pressure or alter a shot because of the simultaneous match play? Did you need to make a long putt to stay with one player but couldn't really run at it because you didn't want to give the other opponent an opening?

Which holes worked well for match play, which didn't?

All the holes played great for match play.

I hope we have enough teams to avoid ACM. On my card it had more of a stroke play feel until Crispin finished us off. Then the way I attacked the course changed.

If I could change a hole at all, it would be the short downhill hole. I would go to the hardware store and get some strong nylon rope and mark the right side and deep as ob. It would make the hole much cooler and better. Another alternative is old garden hose and long nails. You can start picking those up for free on any trash day if you have a few people keeping their eyes out. Could maybe run a free classified add and get more then you would ever need.

I really did enjoy the fact we played all the holds on Saturday, and it was smart to play them all short because of time constraints. More teams may take more holes. Which might also mean missing a few holes.

I would like to comment on the mix-match. It was hard to figure out what two was playing doubles and what three were going to alternate but it should be. It boils down to strategy, three equal platers should and did fair well cause we all knew what the others strengths were which made it an easier choice on placement of drive or up shot. The other two can feed off of or mentor each other in doubles, as this was a team event. The only thing I would want done differnt would be to have Ready-Rooter come in and suck out about three feet of mud from the pond, I will be washing the stank off for months. Not for sure what some thought but that was one of my funnest events of the year, not that I played much but I loved it.

I want to hear more about this. I guess I wasn't paying enough attention to strategies--I was just enjoying watching the competition. So give me some examples, yeah?

To avoid ACM are you thinking only two teams in the finals? Which would mean a longer first day/MixMaster to determine the two best teams.

Or are you thinking 3 teams in the finals but shorter head to head matches? In other words, a longer finals round(s).

#15 that tees off by the red building? You only played this Saturday.

Or #18 that plays to the corner of the hedge rows? (#19 is long skinny w/ parking lot OB.)

Hole #18 is the hole I am thinking of. Long buzz or short XL shot only real problem a bushy little tree to the left.

I think that ACM can be avoided by bringing 4 teams to the finals. Two that qualify and two that get in via the "mix master". Then when you have 4 teams in, the top team or seed gets to pick their first round opponent. For example lets say we had 1 more and they didn't win anything. 6 teams. I still think you could stay with Round Robin, and play all the teams. The top 2 could come out just like they did this year. Then the remaining go play mix master. Throbots would get first pick WVDGA or Free Agents/Hawks (These guys tied so they would have to figure out a tie breaker). Who would of throbots picked? Not WVDGA so Weasles get us. Throbots win their Clash vs. Free Agents WVDGA wins their clash vs. ICT. Now WVDGA would go against Throbots for the title.

I did like the twist that you came up with to settle it with 5 teams, don't get me wrong. But we aren't going to have 5 teams ever again.

Now the reason it felt like stroke play for my group was the someone was always parked and the other 2 always seemed tested.

Hole 1 - I was parked should have made the putt and finished the deal.
Hole 2- Crispin was parked, I was deep in the crap, JD had a tricky putt. Had JD not been in the running, I would have ran more aggressively at the putt. Maybe this proves ACM is good.
Hole 3- Crispin was parked, JD was getting a 3, and I had a tester. I was going to run that putt the same no matter what. Had I not been involved JD may have went at it harder, but I think he was just that much in the crap that he couldn't
Hole 4- JD and I are both in the crap. Crispin is parked and should have finished the deal here. JD and I have no option, but to lay-up. Give us the green light and we probably blow by and end up in the crap, giving Crispin the win regardless. Instead he missed and we all tied.
Hole 5 - Crispin was screwed, I was parked, JD had a tester. Crispin took a 4 and JD had no worries about what was going on he just needed a make.
Hole 6- Cannot believe I lost to both of them on this hole. Made it out, but they were both closer. ACM did work on me here. Crispin wasn't going to miss and I didn't think JD had a gimmie line at his putt, so I gave it a half ass attempt. JD capitalized on it by making his putt.
Hole 7- Crispin and I were getting 4's after our drives, JD in my mind was getting a 3. So I just played to tie Crispin and maybe beat JD. Crispin was doing the same thing. Had we just been playing JD, we both would have probably went with a crazier upshot attempt in an effort to not lose a point.
Hole 8- JD was out off the bat. Crispin had a tester he missed. I was parked and missed then missed. DUMB! I went from taking 2 to losing 2. None of which had anything to do with ACM, simple throwing a good putt.
Hole 9- JD and I were both parked and Crispin had a had to make. It didn't really matter.
Hole 10- I was out after my upshot, so I don't have a good gauge. I did have a putt for the 3 and they were both most likely getting a 3, so I ran it like a normal match play putt with no worries of OB or missing.
Hole
Hole 11- GREAT HOLE by the way. JD gave me a gift after I gave both of them a gift. I went OB on my flick upshot and he was in the crap. Once again when we got to the point where we were trying to finish the deal everything was settled. So Matchplay didn't come into play. Had it just been me vs. JD he may have just played for an easy 4 knowing I was getting a 5 at best. He could have jump putted 60 foot then another 60 footer then drop in and beat me. With Crispin and he in a battle that may have played into his thinking as well. Since he needed the hole vs. Crispin to stay alive. So maybe ACM helped Crispin and I and finished JD off. I did need to beat Crispin on this hole to keep our match alive so JD was not in my thoughts at all.
Hole 12- Now Crispin is out. So I am only thinking about JD. He throws a good drive but is going to have rough footing and may get a 3, most likely a 4 from where he is. I throw a huge 2 finger just making sure I am safe and have good footing and lots of green to work with. JD throws an upshot that gives him a sure 4 and most likely not a 3. I throw missing right if anyplace and hyzer into the slope instead of skipping into the water. JD putts and misses now he has a sure 4. All I have to do is make the putt and I win. At this point I am not to worried about losing the hole, plan on taking a tie at worst. I make the putt and the match is over.
Hole 13 would have been a great way to finish off a match. If JD would have went long, I would have went long. If he would have parked it, I would have been safe but not as safe as if he would have been long. Who knows.

Once again, your format was perfect for 5 teams. It played out fine in my group, don't know about the others. I do see a couple places where ACM was on my mind.

Swede-

Something that might make it more interesting and also get more team would be to adjust the rating levels for the divisions. Shan and Fluty should never have been able to play Int. I know, I know Alex took him to 9 and Kindy took Fluty to 9 or maybe beat him?

Also, we may want to look at the swing thing a little more. After the butt kicking Juice put on them Saturday I think old Guys may be a hot commodity next year. Buddy, Harvey, Dennis, Paulson, even Dave would be great picks. Reason for bringing this up is Kile and Rachel will be gone. Most likely not to be picked for a team.

We want to give as many people a chance to play as possible. We may have basically eliminated a portion of the DG community right off the bat.

Just something that I meant to put in the last post.

A big thank you goes out to everyone who came to this event. Thanks again to Nelson for helping me TD this event. Also a big thanks to the Newton crew who hung out until the end even though we were out of it. It is a wonderful gift to have a graphic artist like Sweets at your course and helping create logos, maps, and scorecards. Thanks to Dan, Todd and James for helping with cleanup and setup. This was a great first year and I have a goal of 8-10 teams for next year. Congrats to Crispin, Ben, Iqbal, Casey and Rachel on winning The Kansas Team Championships in 2011. I talked with my wife's parents and maybe next year we will have homemade ice cream for dinner on Saturday night. So until next year get your teams together and let's blow it out!

Smitty,
Not many people would take the time to write a synopsis of their thinking on 13 holes. Cheers. Of course not many people would read it three times, either
After reading it, I'm not entirely convinced that ACM was so bad. That said, I like better your/Tull's idea of a 4 team semi-final with the first day qualifiers picking their opponent. Semi's and Finals would both be 9-holes instead of 13. Maybe if Saturday's qualifiers get to pick their opponent, the MixMaster qualifiers pick which 9 they play.

Divisions. Unfortunately, ladies are in short supply. Probably too short to have their own division and still get the number of teams we want. I hate to read too much into the 5 individual players in the Swing position but looking at the cards, Grandmasters, Jr's, and Women should have been 3 different divisions. In other words, Juice never lost, and the Jr's beat the gals.

So put that together with the two ADV/OPEN players who's ratings let them play intermediate and I'd say we need to at very least adjust the ratings requirements for ADV and INT. Or possibly make all divisions ratings based. Rather than making a player who qualifies for G-Master, Jr, or Women's divisions play in the same division, have 5 ratings-based slots and require a team to have at least one G-Master, Jr, or Woman. Alex Z played salty golf all weekend in the INT spot. You know Twitch and Hooper could have as well. And Juice could play in a Masters/Int/ADV, you name it. The gals need to be playing with players of a similar skill-level, not players in a similar sized division.

It is for a trophy instead of cash, but players at this tournament should be playing at least close to the same divisions they play at any other tourney.

Another option is to make teams 6 players but I think that would cut down on the # of teams we could get--especially from smaller towns/less populated regions.

MixMaster. The idea that got the most nods of approval for next year's MixMaster is
1 player Singles
2 players Alt shot
2 players Best shot

I think the strategy here could get pretty hairy.

or if you like a lot of rules:
1 player Singles
2 players Best Shot
2 Players playing thirds of the course in Alt/Best/Tough Shot

ACM could also be used in the MixMaster spot as a way to get more matches done quickly.

I personally liked how the MixMaster played out. I would be interested to hear a review from Newton and the Free Agents.

I know that Dan wasn't a big fan of it from the Free Agents. What did Kindy and Sweet Phil think? Personally I would have had Kindy play with someone in the doubles portion. He is probably the best putter on that team, and could have probably saved some strokes.

As far as the Free Agents go, Alex and Tull played very well together. I don't know how the 3some played. I don't know how well their games complimented each other. I also know they were pretty much complete strangers before the event started. They could play into the amount of nerves a person felt. I know the Winfield trio has known and played golf togther for 1000 years.

I agree that we don't have enough women to justify their own division. I also think that 5 people are perfect. If you go with 6 you are going to have more ties to break. Maybe that Swing division needs to have a MAX rating on it.

Much like the other divisions. Twitch and Hooper were going to kill the girls and Juice was going to beat kids based on course knowledge and experience.

NOT TRYING TO STEP ON ANY TOES OR PUT MY FOOT IN MY MOUTH HERE:

As long as we are doing this as a ratings based event we are going to have to go with what the ratings say. Lets say the swing player can have a max rating of 900-910 area. Twitch, Hooper, Juice are all out and filling in a different division for a team. Shan and Fluty are gone and looking to play Advanced for their team. I think we can agree that all 5 of those people are playing well out of their division. This might allow someone like Kindy or Elrod to move into the swing spot. Where they can be more competitive over any set of holes on the course.

As long as it is a raitings based event, we should probably roll with a KS player level instead of what the PDGA uses.

I will do a little research and find the player ratings for the players that have them.

That is a thing? KS player level? You mean there are numbers somewhere or are you talking about general knowledge of how someone plays? Full of surprises, this guy. Speaking of surprises and numbers, haven't heard a peep from Schoeny about any of this. I thought you'd be jumping in to the debates here, Mike!

Warning this will make any post that Hopper has ever posted look like Chump Change! Enter and read at your own risk.

Remember many of these ratings would change before next year. Even if you don't read the entire post, and I dare a single person to honestly read the entire thing, you will see the number of people there really could be to pick from. There is honestly no reason that this event couldn't grow to 20 teams. All we have to do is get people from other parts of the state. This year, with the exception of Elrod, Winfield had the longest drive.

These are just the PDGA members. We could easily figure a player rating for a person by looking at their play at PDGA events and average their rating. If someone wants to do that for any of the nonmembers we had this year, go for it.

Here you go:

Crispin 991
Iqbal- Over 40 so not an issue Not a member
Wiggins 955
Fluty 915
Rachel NOT PDGA member

Smitty 993
Cliff - Over 40 so not an issue 890
Stun Not Current
Shan 934
Twitch 919

JD 944
Curtis - Over 40 so not an issue 951
Vest 957
Jeremy
Hooper 889

Dan Not a member
Todd - Over 40 so not an issue Not a member
Sweets 945
Kindy 850
Juice Not a member

Austin 976
Elrod 849
Tull 943
Alex Not a member
Kile –Not a member

Looks to me like we may want to go something like this???
Position 1- Any player any rating.
Position 2- Any player over the age of 40 any rating.
Position 3- Max player rating of 960 (That lets Wiggins and Vest in this year. Next year they will most likely be much higher.)
Position 4- Max player rating of 930-935. (This would have let Shan and Fluty in this year, next year both should be much higher. If you go much lower, their may not be much diff. between this and the lowest.)
Position 5- You could go max player rating of 900-890 area. Hooper, Kindy, Elrod, and the girls would have all fit in here.

Some interesting player ratings from people who didnt play.
Duh- the top women in Kansas could play and the 5 spot.
Paige Pierce the defending world champ would be forced to play in the 3 spot with the advanced.

Here is a list of all the current PDGA members who could have played in the Advanced spot this year with the limitations above.

I may have.

I just can't believe how much fun this event was, and want to help make small changes to it that will make it even better.

I do think that my ratings numbers are pretty close.

The team that wins will probably be the team that can bag the best every year. The system will always be flawed. I just think we need to look at "Kansas player rating Levels" instead of what the PDGA assigns.
