IMHO, getting a PDGA # is worth it...as that # is yours forever. Now whether you will continue to find value in it will depend on your desire to participate/compete. With the number of regional/local PDGA sanctioned tourneys increasing every year, you'll have quite a few opportunities to put your membership to use and get your money's worth...not to mention that traveling out of town to larger sanctioned tourneys is a lot of fun.
A few years ago, we bought our buddy's new born son a PDGA #. If he were to ever pick up the game later in life, he would certainly have the lowest # of his peers.
