On the Way to Herington

I didn't leave Wichita till just after 7:30. I took I-135 to 50 east.

About 3 miles short of joining up with 77 in Florence, I saw the worst wreck of my life. I got there just as police showed up to shut down the road.

Two semi trucks had apparently collided head-on. One must have went asleep at the wheel because no one else was involved and the road was just one long flat stretch.

These huge trucks had been reduced to small pieces barely recognizable. There just was no way possible anyone could live through this kind of crash. When I came back through that night, a gas station clerk confirmed that both drivers had died.

I just thought I'd post this because I know many of us die hard discers put a lot of miles on the road. There have been many times I haven't got much sleep the night before a tourney. While I'm fine that morning, after a day's worth of golf, that drive home can be an excercise of endurance in itself. DM4 and Ron can probably vouch for that.

So, that wreck was pretty sobering. And I was already sober... We don't always have these reminders with us of how driving is the most dangerous thing most of us will ever do.

What is the moral? Drive with good tread and start drinking more coffee!

TRAVEL SAFE

Last year a young norman golfer died returning from a tournament.Unfortunately he will not be the last.Almost everybody I play with knows about my preference in travel cross country.Driving to far away tournaments is easy. The anticipation helps keep you focused.Coming home is rough .Like the song say`s "COMING DOWN IS THE HARDEST PART".Any time you expend your energy ,playing to the limit of your focus, you get worn out.The emotional ups and downs take a lot out .It helps to regroup by eating a snack (like an energy bar)before setting out.Caffiene helps short term but wears off and can drop you before you`re done traveling.Chew gum and don`t get too comfortable.Traveling with a co-pilot helps more than anything.
Make stops rather than falling asleep at the wheel.Having seen the results ,I`m a believer.

On my way to Winfield to pick up some guys to go to Herrington yesterday, I was cruising down the Highway and hit a deer. It was 6:10 AM, when I came of the top of a high spot in the road I seen a deer in the middle of the road, he looked like he was grazing in the middle of the road. As I started to slow down to manuver around the deer I seen another in the ditch.

Thankfully I was driving my Suburban because I was picking up 3 people in Winfield and already had 2 from Wellington. It did minimal damage to my ride, but I was freaked out on the way home, kept thinking I was seening deer come up the ditch!

it was hard on the mind game.

Yep, still get freaked out when I start to fall asleep! I stop, stretch, drink more caffeine, or get a motel! Have done that a time or too! Be safe while driving. Would not want to lose any of us!!!!

Try this. When you get tired drink a cup of coffee or some caffeine and then take a fifteen minute nap. Most of the time this little trick will do wonders in reviving you.

Well, I can personally tell you that falling asleep at the wheel is NOT a fun experience. I rolled my car and ended up in the ditch that just happened to be full of water. So...when my car started filling up I squeezed my big butt out of the REAR side window of a Celica!!!!!!! Somehow I was LUCKY enough to only get a cut on my head, but I never want to relive it again!
